Or it could be that some inbox.com accounts have had problems while others have continued working fine. Although I don't feel like looking it up at the moment, I recall at least one time in the past that several users were reporting problems here at the same time, with no problems reported openly at the site itself, and nothing these users had in common as far as anyone ever determined, except that they were all having problems with their Inbox.com accounts. While of course it's possible that there could be a problem at the user's end whenever one has a problem with any email service, from the nature of the problem, it was clear to me that that wasn't the case the times I've had problems with the service. And like I said above (now for the third time), in one of those cases their support told me that it was due to a bug in their system. Or perhaps I only thought they told me that due to "something wrong at my end"?

[moderator:] I have moved the first half of this post to a new thread.

If I had important emails to get out, I would be using outlook express and the email address that comes with my isp. I would not depend on a freebie email service is stuff was that urgent.

Gawab has its up and downtimes also. I used to like it because you could see if your email had been read. .. now with reading in split panes, that cancels out that options.

For what it's worth, out of 474 test messages that I sent to my inbox.com account between Sep/03/2006 and Dec/27/2007, only 1 message went MIA. That's a lot better than some providers.

One thing that I don't like is , the last time that I tested, they don't bounce messages sent to nonexistant @inbox.com addresses. Some may argue that this is a good thing in the fight against spam, but it's a minus if someone you know is sending messages to a dead account and they don't get bounces.
I'm letting one of my inbox.com accounts expire to see what happens when I send to that address. (You can't cancel the account, you have to let it expire after 3 months of non-use.)
I still wonder if some people are still sending mail to my·old·MyRealBox·address because they don't know the mailbox is dead.

I don't know if I've ever had a message to my Inbox.com account go MIA, but then I've never really carefully tested it for that, as it's never been more than an extra backup account for me and I've never received any legitimate messages sent directly to the account, either by myself or anyone else. My problems have only involved an inability to login to the webmail interface (I've never had any use for its POP access), in which in most cases the login process would just "hang" endlessly, a problem reported by several others in this forum at around the same time as I seem to recall, except for the one time when I got an erroneous "disabled for abuse" message on attempted login. In each case these problems persisted for anywhere from a couple to several days at a time.

Regarding Inbox...

Over the past 4 or 5 months I've tested out ten webmail accounts, and hate to tell you,
but Inbox & Bluebottle beat the rest hands down. Now I don't check either more than
couple times a week, so I can't say much on how often they go offline (other than
neither has ever been down when I tried). Both have treated me well, which is way
more than I can say about the other eight!

Just curious Csin. Who were the other 8 webmail accounts that you tried?

I started out with 'planertsave', then (in order) tried out: 'hotmail', 'mail.com', 'sacmail', 'cryptomail', 'hushmail', 'cyber-rights', 'mailvault', 'diino', 'lavabit', & lastly 'bigstring'. To be fair, I did not actually get to testdrive lavabit or diino (signup was easy but never did get to access either account). Think neither is webmail or else they require downloads/installs. I'm public computer user so webmail is required and downloads is a no-no!

You're right about lavabit, they don't have webmail yet.
If your account is still active you could use a service like mail2web.

I tested two of the free ones today and it works with lavabit which have no webmail interface.
I could send using the smtp of these services instead?

XS2Mail has discontinued but emailanywhere seems to be ok too.

But they behave differently on my hotmail account.

mail2web did end up in the inbox while emailanywhere end up in trash so that doesn't look good.

so mail2web seems to be best among the free services?

Hi,

I use Lavabit as my main email account, but I usually download it to OE. Wrt services like mail2web, I was always concerned about security issues. (I know that sounds odd coming from someone using OE. ) Lavabit has very noble intentions in the area of privacy/security, and I was afraid that using a third party (like mail2web) to access my Lavabit account could somehow compromise the security of my username + password. (I'm really looking forward to Lavabit's own webmail interface.)

Anyway, I'm the furthest thing from an expert in these matters, but I was wondering.... if I were to use a service like mail2web in the meantime, how do I know which one is the most trustworthy/honest (not merely 'reliable') ?

Thanks !

I wish I knew. If I remember correctly we have had that question here before but I don't remember what they recommended. I wish me knew too.

Yes, I found several threads (from 2002 !) mentioning mail2web as secure between the browser and mail2web. And since mail2web allows secure SSL access to the pop3 service (like Lavabit which has SSL), I'm assuming it's pretty secure all the way around.

I don't know much about the service (or other similar ones) at this moment. But, I'm hoping any 'physical'/electronic security is matched by a responsible privacy policy people-wise (as Lavabit has).

I was just curious what more experienced users thought.

Thanks for the tip...unfortunately I discarded the necessary info (password, username, etc.) long ago. At the moment I'm really tempted to open another account at Lavabit and use your mail2web option. Anyone out there got an ETA on when Lavabit's webmail is supposed to be ready?

Why use other email services anyway?

For an email service that's no doubt the worst reliability I've ever seen. I wonder what those guys are doing there ? Sitting on trees and chewing rocks ?

Anyway, a piece of advice: DON'T USE INBOX.COM for important and urgent emails... or just don't use it. Don't make my mistake.

Gmail it is then...

I'm new to this forum stuff , so please bear with me if i ask some fundamental questions. :
My first question is - why use gmail or the like, when as a fastmail member, i receive everything i need wrt emails ?

Your lucky if your fastmail works.
imo it's probably one of the worst service around, paid or not.
The threads says it all almost everyday..
