interface for use on public and shared computers?

One thing I liked about the classic interface, back when it was the default, is that it had a checkbox for "public" or "shared" computers, whereby content wouldn't be cached. That was convenient, but now it's gone, not on the "new" nor the classic interface as far as I can see. Even more surprising, there doesn't seem to be any discussion about it on these forums.

Am I missing something? I can live with the new interface, or the old one, but I'd sure like to have this option back for the occasions when I need to get my mail using insecure computers.

FF and Chrome have "anonymous/private" mode, where nothing is cached.

IE also does, I'm sure Opera has something similar.

It shouldn't be cached to disk anyway if you use https. I'm not sure what that setting did exactly but I assumed it was more to do with tracking sessions

This is contradicted here and here.
