FWIW: this morning I received a mail from Yahoo stating that two of my contacts have been deleted as their addresses are no longer active...

I don't think my sister-in-law's address has been inactive for a year, since it is tied to her Facebook account, but now is in the recycling bin anyway according to this. As well, within a minute after receiving this message, it appears that I had sent a blank email to myself. Yahoo says I did, anyway. Wondering now about questionable practices, spoofing, and why so many ISPs (including mine) are willing to accept this...

And for the $1.99 you get a three year watch.

I guess that means they plan to continue to purge unused user names into the future.

I received an email from Yahoo this AM, stating that my desired username was available. Upon clicking the provided link, it told me that I already had a Yahoo Mail Extra Address (I do), and that I could only have the username by signing up for another account.

I guess Yahoo! usernames must be more desirable than I thought they were.

I got an email overnight advising me that my requested user name is now mine. I'll never use it, but I claimed it anyway.

How in the world did they come up with that figure?

So guys, how much would you really pay to have the troops at Yahoo keep an eye out for your desired name?

$2.99, $5.99, more than that?

At what point does the craziness end?

$2 is a nominal fee in today's world, but it stops speculators just filling out for lots of names in hope they can get one that they can sell.

Plus, it pulls in people who are willing to share their payment info with Yahoo, a very desirable group.

It seems a sensible solution to me.
