Thanks nbarr, William9, and bbauri for the feedback re Outlook.com. I'll probably also do as nbarr and try forwarding my messages to it to test it out before considering using it as a "direct", or primary, address. (I was without regular Internet access for the better part of a year until a couple of months ago, so I've been playing "catch up.").

Not wanting to be the defender of Gmail here since I don't really trust Google's data mining that much, but one truth has to be said: Google scans your emails for advertising purposes using a bot, no human eyes of a staff member.
Also, if something is free, it's likely to have its consequences so I'd be a bit sceptic about GMX, Yahoo, Mail and Microsoft not doing some sort of data mining. They all need to get advertisement incomes, no? I think if you insist on no preying eyes you're better off using a paid email provider, an email address provided as part of your ADSL package, or a local provider which has a limited geographical area they operate in. That said, I sometimes doubt about Gmail really. It is easy to read the horror stories about data mining, and I for sure object to the practise of data mining for commercial purposes. On the other hand, of the millions of Gmail accounts, how big is the chance some actual person (as opposed to a bot) will pick your account to manually scan your emails? Maybe the heated debates about Gmail make people a bit overconcerned and thus panicking slightly too rapidly? I am a bit in doubt myself. |

I need gmail for the smartphone so I joined it again.
One annoying thing is that if I am signed in or logged in to the webmail and then read about a music file on youtube then when clicking on it I automatically is logged in to youtube too. Yes very practical if one want to make a comment or something But I did not realize that is how it works. So big surprise to me. Maybe one can change a setting somewhere to stop such? I did a misspelling of my name so one small got big like DRew when it should have been Drew like one expect and despite all was set in stone if one google a lot then one find an explanation how to change the name. That is not the username that is something else. I talk about the real name of the one using an account. |
