![]() CarlS, I appreciate your feedback on the issue of digital security, however any encrypted communication, given sufficient time and effort can be broken, especially if the effort is undertaken by a police state with unlimited authority and unlimited resources. 99% of the equation isn't the extent of the encryption, but whether or not one is suspected in the first place. The attempt to intercept, decrypt, and translate billions of electronic communications is not only impractical but for all intents and purposes, is impossible. Therefore, profiling is a necessity. I simply offer some out of the box suggestions that fly under the radar of inquiring authorities. Often hiding in plain sight is better than advertising your status and revealing your cover.

It says on their website that it doesn't work on a Mac but they are working on it, I don't know how long it takes for them to reply to inquiries. |

Safe-Mail has been around for quite a few years. I do not know where their servers are based but I believe they are an Israeli company.
I was with Safe-Mail in the past and had no complaints besides the fact that they send your computer IP on the headers, that is the reason why I left them, but if all you care about is encryption, it is a good service. |

maybe opolis secure mail may help you
Moderator:URL removed
opolis uses standard public private key encryption. your opolis mails are accessed by a so called mail client which you can use everywhere, even in any internet cafe. advantage is that none of your mail transactions can be traced on the host machine, as encryption is embedded in the mail client. then, with opolis the sender decides if and how the recipient is allowed to further process a sent email (alas, whether the recipient is allowed to forward your mail, to copy or print it, or to respond to it). this also extends to txt and photo attachments. - also, the sender is able to monitor the entire path of a message sent (such as when your mail has been opened and how it has been further processed, if allowed to do so ...) maybe it is an alternative for what you are looking for. Hi, Carl
You mentioned several times here that Hushmail is coming out with some upgrades including a new interface. Do you have any inside knowledge on what the specifics are ? More storage for free users ? Removing the ads that pop up for free users ? Ability to compose in HTML ? |

no I would not say I have any insider information about Hushmail but I have been e-mailing back and forth with one of their developers and I have provided them with a lot of opinions and suggestions for a new interface. They have told me that the will release it any month now and lately they have posted this on their website. As far as I know there are no pop ups in the free accounts of Hushmail. I don't know anything about more free storage but it seems unlikely since Hushmail is a commercial service. There are limits in PGP-encrypting HTML formatted messages. |

Thanks for reply and the Hushmail link ! (Btw, my reference to ads was not so much to pop-ups, but to the fact that, at the free level, during sign-in one sees a "nag" screen offering premium services.) |

As good a place as any
Does anyone know about the security of lavabit?
I am thinking this may be a coincidence, but maybe not. I made an account with lavabit on Saturday using the same password as my gmail account. My gmail account I was forwarding to was hacked on Sunday from a chinese IP address. |

![]() What I love about Safe Mail is a) it has no option to store passwords and sign in automatically. No worries about checking if the "remember password" box is unticked, and somehow it even manages to log in without Internet Explorer asking if you want to remember the password. I know no other email provider that does that, except LuxSci. Safe Mail is the only free provider where I've seen this very much appreciated fact. b) the Safe Mail interface is extremely user friendly c) Tracing succesful and unsuccesful log-ins d) even while their terms state that accounts become defunct after X months without sign-in, they don't seem to enforce it (although with my Safe Mail account that is critical I make sure to sign in regularly rather than playing with fate ![]() The only downside is the slow support. But then the service is very good and user friendly, I don't see myself needing their support anytime soon. Also note that Israel is known for its very advanced IT industry, so if new features in email get developed you can somewhat assume Safe Mail will be amongst the first to apply them. In fact, most computers have some bits and pieces developed in Israel or at least based on Israeli inventions. So due to their location Safe Mail will have rapid access to new developments and technologies. |

![]() I like being able to save my password since it is 64 characters. So Safe-mail is not something for me. And as for the IP you are traceable even though your IP-address changes from time to time since your ISP most likely keeps logs and anybody could probably from your IP-address pinpoint your whereabouts down to your city. Try for yourself with your current ip-address at http://whatismyipaddress.com |
