A and CNAME records same?

Hi,

I'm in the process of moving a domain's emails to Google Apps.

Currently we use a webhosting email service, so in the DNS, we have an A record "mail" pointing at an IP address. As you know with G Apps, you can create a CNAME "mail" pointing to ghs.google.com for customised URL's.

Now in the overlapping period between changing MX records, is it ok to have both a "mail" CNAME record pointing at Google, AND an "mail" A record pointing at the Webhost email servers? Would there be any problems?

I'd change everything over at the same time.

You can't have both an a record and a cname for the same domain name at the same time. Switch it.
