Gmail gets IMAP

Just ran across this article. It looks like Google is adding IMAP access to Gmail.

I don't see it in my Gmail account settings yet.

However, I could and did read the faq here and they are quite disappointing. I expected that they would find a reasonable way to apply "labels" using IMAP flags (which could have set a standard for doing this), but what they really did was implement them as folders, meaning that when a message has multiple labels the IMAP client holds multiple copies in different folders. Subfolders in IMAP don't translate to multiple labels (such as folder "label1/2006a" would translate to a label "label1/2006a" and not to two labels "label1", and "2006a").

Mainly what I see from this is that Gmail is quite incompatible with IMAP, but probably they had to make some compromises to allow some minimum functionality for people who want to use it with IMAP clients on mobile phones.

Great news. Thanks for the heads up placebo.

I checked one of my Google Apps accounts and IMAP was available so I enabled it.
A quick test of things (one send and one receive) indicates that Gmail's IMAP behaves as one would expect an IMAP account to behave. Creating a subfolder in your mail client produces a corresponding Label in the web interface with the name [Gmail]/foldername.

IMAP in Gmail. Sounds useful. So I was wondering if this will finally solve my main concern with Apple Mail and Gmail:
I usually load my emails into Apple Mail in the morning, answer them offline on the train and then send them off in the office. Now the problem is that it does not sync the sent mail back to Gmail when I use POP. Will IMAP solve this problem? If not, does anyone know the answer to this problem?

If you have a USB storage device, you could download a portable version of Mozilla's Thunderbird. Then yes, your syncing with GMail should solve your problem.

BTW Tomaz, welcome to EMD forums!

Thanks for your answer and for the welcome ;-)
So IMAP should sync also sent messages back to Gmail, that sounds good!
So what would be the advantage of using portable Thunderbird over Apple Mail? I assume Portable Thunderbird is for people who wanna use the same client with their stored emails on different computers using a USB stick, right?
Well, I use the same computer (my MacBook) at home and at work, so that won't be necessary. Or am I missing something?

My normal GMail account has IMAP but my Google Apps email does not. Does anyone know if it should have IMAP eventually or are the Google Apps accounts different some how?
