Free Books

Take a look at this O'Reilly book here.

It has a sample chapter and a table of contents like any other O'Reilly catalogue entry. However, if you look at the "Full License" and "online book" links below the cover picture, you will see that the authors have GPLed it and it is downloadable in pdf or xml format. For obvious reasons O'Reilly haven't made this at all obvious.

Anyone know of other such books, or online lists.

I'll leap in here and say: please only provide links to LEGAL online books, not bootlegged ones.

They say the books are in the public domain.
Project Gutenberg has a lot more. But that side has an advantage that they broke the books they have into chapters on separate pages on the website, and that makes it much more convenient to read online. I downloaded several books in the past from Project Gutenberg and other websites, and one of the problems is that it is difficult to keep track of where you stopped reading when you come back to the book to continue reading.

https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/ has a lot. Just read this
Acknowledgment of Harmful Content

The Biodiversity Heritage Library acknowledges the existence of harmful content in many biodiversity science publications and original materials included in its collection. We are reckoning with the, at times, painful heritage of our collection and seeking to address its impact on science and culture today. As a curated digital collection aggregating content from hundreds of providers into a single platform, BHL is a reflection of the historical collection development decisions of those providers as well as the publishing practices and historical colonial processes that have shaped the scholarly record of biodiversity science. Scientific understanding evolves over time, through critical analysis of new information and scrutiny of its mistakes. We recognize that as a free and open access digital library, we simultaneously increase and promote access to materials, some of which espouse deep prejudices that are counterproductive to the advancement of scientific knowledge and overshadow the contributions of marginalized peoples across the globe. At best these views are outdated; at worst, the legacy of natural sciences is unjust and inhumane. The harmful content in BHL?s collection goes against the values of the Biodiversity Heritage Library. It is provided for access as part of the historical record.
I guess they were referring to this type of content https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/...type=F#/titles

I'll just mention my general disapproval of spreading the belief that books should be free.

Libraries already exist. Apart from that, it does not help to have people think that books are so worthless that no one should pay for them.

Point made I agree. As far I can see, no one has mentioned that books should be free. There are a lot of free books out there. Many with expired copyrights, some are just public domain. I buy books all the time, I prefer a real book over an electronic book anyway. That said I have a number of free books in my electronic collection that I use Calibre to manage. I also have books in Calibre the I have purchased.

https://blog.archive.org/tag/lawsuit/
On Sept 4, 2024, the US Court of Appeals in New York affirmed the lower court ruling in the lawsuit filed against us by Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, and Penguin Random House. While the Internet Archive is disappointed by this opinion?it was never the Internet Archive?s intention to get into a lawsuit over lending digitized books?we respect the outcome.

To date, we have removed over 500,000 books from lending on archive.org (and therefore also openlibrary.org). While we are reviewing all available options, this judicial opinion will lead to the removal of many more books from lending. It is important for the Internet Archive and all libraries to continue to have a healthy relationship with publishers and authors.

Please be assured that millions of digitized books will still be available to those with print disabilities, small sections will be available for those linking into them from Wikipedia and through interlibrary loan, books will continue to be preserved for the long term, and other protected library uses will continue to inform digital learners everywhere.
