How did Samsung become so big?

I've always wondered how Samsung has become so big now especially in TV and smartphones. 20 years ago, I never thought of buying electronics from them always TV/VCR/DVD/etc. from the likes of Sony, Panasonic, JVC....

Any ideas please?

Avion - I thought it was obvious why I posted again - I created a new thread just for the subject "How did Samsung becomes so big?" as it might attract more discussion than in the "4 v 6 Head VCRs - Panasonic don't make them?" thread....

But it doesn't look like it has. Maybe everyone is on holiday!
