Arrow Help us test the new server

I've just installed a new IMAP/POP proxy front-end that I need people to try out. Can you please set your IMAP/POP servers to server3.fastmail.fm is you have a chance? All other configuration details are identical.

To clarify: you do not NEED to change your configuration; this server is just a temporary testing server that will be removed in a few days. However, if at all possible we would very much appreciate you using it for a few days, since it really needs to be tested in something close to a production environment before we move it to our production server.

To help us test, go to the account settings screen of your IMAP client and change "IMAP Server" or "POP Server" to server3.fastmail.fm. If you have any problems, simply switch back to www.fastmail.fm as before.

It is running IMAP and POP, both with and without SSL. It is not running TLS--I'd be interested to hear if any IMAP clients have a problem with that (they shouldn't, since our server isn't advertising it). I'd be interested in hearing reports of uploading and downloading large files, copying across folders, etc... Of course if you have a low bandwidth account don't do this or you'll go over your quota!

Techie details: this server is running the Perdition multiplexing proxy. It is simply forwarding requests onto the main server at the moment. We plan to use this to allow us to have multiple IMAP servers, with different users on each server.

Here's what I've gotten when checking my email with Eudora Pro:

The IMAP command has failed
Reason: IMAP connection to server "server3.fastmail.fm" has been broken.

What have you got as your SSL/Security option in Eudora, Jessm?

It's Jessica.

Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
Secure Sockets when Sending: If Available, STARTTLS

Interesting. Looks like Eudora uses a different SSL connection somehow--the clients I tried worked fine. I've sent an email to the author to chase this up.

By the way, SSL connections will give an error about the certificate not matching (since this server isn't really "www.fastmail.fm") which you can safely ignore.

Jessica: how about if you turn secure sockets off?

I turned secure sockets off. This time it didn't give me an error message.

The strange thing is that I configured Eudora to retrieve FastMail messages seconds before I saw your request for testing. And I'm still trying to figure out why I can't retrieve any messages. It checks but nothing happens. And I see new messages when I open my account on the Web.

It's all configured following the step-by-step configuration set up in the HELP section.

OK, using it in kmail. No problems, even seems faster.

I went to "test capababilities" and it detected that it only supported SSL and not TLS.

The only thing is (but isn't really a problem) is that it keeps nagging about that the certificate is for the wrong server.

Everything works fine using Mulberry and checking my mail, copying messages to other folders and purging.

But, I can't seem to SEND any messages via the new server, even using the IP address.

When using "server3.fastmail.fm " I get the error "Host not found during DNS lookup".

When I use the IP address I get the same error. Now, this is with SSLv3 enabled. With it off it does not matter, I get the same error.

It is truly weird that Mulberry says that it can not resolve the DNS for "server3.fastmail.fm " but the receive side works fine.

A manual TraceRT worked fine and worked out to 15 hops to RackSpace.

I dunno.

That server is not set up for sending--set POP/IMAP to the new server, but leave SMTP as it was. Pretty dumb error message Mulberry gives though!

The certificate error is expected--it's because it's not on the right server yet.
