Lightbulb Simple hosting for your domain

OK, everyone who wants their very own domain for their email address, but is perplexed by all this 'MX records', 'email forwarding', 'name server delegation', etc, raise your hand.

<...hands go up...>

OK, I've got great news! FastMail.FM now has a brand-new domain hosting feature where we host everything for you! All you need to do is register the domain you want, and then follow the instructions here: http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts...ml#AliasDomain .

Have fun!

Hi,

Just a couple of quick questions here. I have three domains now. Based on some recent discussions both here and in the help forum, I've learned a lot about Name Servers and Registrars.

Also, just this weekend, I changed my NS from one DNS to another.

I talked to someone today about MX vs. mail forwarding.

I guess my question is, this seems helpful for those that want MX.

Regarding "Hosting", I don't think you mean hosting as hosting our site, do you?

Also, you wouldn't be offering URL forwarding, that would be done throught the NS like Zoneedit, correct?

From the linked page:

If you want a web site as well as email on your site, you will have to use a separate domain manager to point their 'A' record at your web-site, and their 'MX' records at smtp.us.fastmail.fm (first), and smtp.eu.fastmail.fm (second).
Which is a "yes".

We may well offer URL forwarding one day, but for now if you want a web site on your domain too how need a separate domain manager.

After some discussion today about MX email vs. Email forwarding, I was advised that if I only have one mailbox, and I'm the only user and sole recipient of my fastmail account and all my domain email, then the combination of

Zoneedit forwarding all my email to fastmail.fm seems to be fine for that purpose and just sending from fastmail.fm customizing the header seems practical in this case.

MX seems more effective when there are muliple users and multiple mailboxes distributing to various email boxes.

I assume this method will work fine so long as the forwarding is reliable and all mail lands in my fastmail.fm inbox.

If you use forwarding at Zoneedit, your emails will count bandwidth both at Zoneedit and FastMail. If you are getting over the free quota at Zoneedit it is IMO getting quite expensive (about 5$/200MB). So if you receive a lot of emails, I think it would be economical advantage to point MX directly at FastMail.

Question

Is it possible to use the same "own domain" with more then one username (e.g. if we are two or more persons who use the domain) or do we have to forward it from an extern handler to our respective fastmail-accounts?

Need advice

I've read the description in Jeremy's FAQ, but still have some questions. The easiest way (for me) is to describe the scenario and hope Jeremy can explain what I should do.

I currently have a domain hosted with Interland (around $30) per month. That's really a waste of money since I mostly use it for email. I have 5 email accounts that I use there: two that I use, one that my wife uses, one that my mother uses, and one for a friend of mine. Their web-mail sucks, they have no IMAP support, although they are fast and there is no limit on mailbox sizes, message sizes, etc.

Here's what I would like to do (assume my domain is mydomain.com):
1. Have one enhanced FM email account for myself with several aliases: me@mydomain.com, me@fastmail.fm, me1@mydomain.com
2. Have one more account (member or full) for my wife and one for my mother (member or full), e.g. wife@mydomain.com and mother@mydomain.com.
3. Be able to host the web site (www.mydomain.com) some place else, maybe at home (I've done that with another domain that I have)

What do I do? Do I purchase all separate accounts from FM? Help me out! Thanks!

Thumbs up

I believe you can easily set this up on the alias page. Simply use
the other fastmail account as the target for the domain alias, and mail sent to this person will end up in their mailbox.

By the way, bad grammar here on the details page(there are two "is"):

Is is possible to receive email sent to one of your own domains rather than FastMail.FM's domains

Yes you can have multiple accounts in your domain without using an external forwarder. Signup a separate FastMail.FM account for each person that needs a separate mailbox. Upgrade at least one to Enhanced--this account is the 'domain administrator'. Upgrade all others to at least Member. Login to the Enhanced account and add your domain. Add Aliases for each domain user, and set the target to the mailbox that user has created on FastMail.FM. You can also specify external accounts as the target if you like.

Create the enhanced account for yourself. You're the 'Domain administrator'. Create accounts for your mum and your wife. They must be at least member level accounts. Login to your enhanced account and set up your domain, your personal aliases, and also set up your mother's and wife's domain aliases to point to their respective accounts.

Since you want a web site too, you'll need to use a domain manager. Get a zone for free at www.zoneedit.com, point an IP address for www... at your web site, and point mail exchanger (MX) records at smtp.us.fastmail.fm and smtp.eu.fastmail.fm.

Correct. We've had that for a while, but previously you had to use a separate domain manager. Now however if you don't need a web site you can use us as your domain manager.

OK, this sounds like what I want to do, but I'm still a bit confused --

My goal is to have ZoneEdit point to myrealwebsite.com, but also directly point to FM's mail servers, so they can handle the mail for myrealwebsite.com.

So here goes:
I got the myrealwebsite.com name through godaddy, and then had ZoneEdit do the DNS thing to point to myrealwebsite.com. So far, so good, but the mail part throws me --

First, it looks like I can use ZoneEdit's mail forwarding service so all mail addressed to myrealwebsite.com goes through ZoneEdit's mail servers and then gets forwarded to fastmail.fm, where I already have myrealwebsite.com and aliases/catchalls for myrealwebsite.com set up. FM is not hosting this domain, as it is a real domain/website.

I understand the above, but here's where it gets murky for me:

If I _don't_ use ZoneEdit's mail forwarding service, but instead elect to set up a MX (Mail Exchanger) record in ZoneEdit to explicitly point to the FM mailservers, two things concern me:

1. ZoneEdit, in the example used in their FAQ, advises me that to do this, I need not only the names of the 1st and 2nd mailservers (smtp.us.fastmail.fm, smtp.eu.fastmail.fm) but I also need to _put their IP addresses in an A record _. Really? Where's their IP addresses?

2. Assuming I wanted to accomplish #1 through ZoneEdit --
Could this really work, so I can end up with ZoneEdit not only pointing to myrealwebsite.com, but also pointing directly at the FastMail mailservers, thereby eliminating ZoneEdit's mailservers as middleman?
