IMAP fastmail help
Hi,
I'm trying to use IMAP with my fastmail account.... I'd like to use Outlook 2000 but when I for example want to delete a message, it just crosses the message out and I have to erase it via Webmail... it appears the same in OE6 and thunderbird, how can I use these clients where when I delete it, it deletes it on the webmail. thanks |

I'm no expert i have just started using Mulberry with Imap on my FastMail account, in Mulberry after you delete a message you can then Expunge it also. There must be a button or setting somewhere in Outlook that says Expunge or Purge deleted mail.
When i delete and Expunge mail in Mulberry it does not delete it from my FastMail webmail |

In Outlook you have to go into "Edit > Purge Deleted Messages" to get rid of them. I think that Outlook express can be set to do this when you logout but I think you have to do it manually in Outlook. Not sure though. Here is some info:-

Good morning Daniel,
but when I tried in Outlook, and then went into webmail, it just puts them in the trash, and doesn't delete them... am I better off using Outlook 2000 or OE6, which is best? |

I use OE6.
I just tried purging in it - the message disappeared. I tried in Outlook - the message didn't move to trash after I purged. That's a newer version, however. |

ok thanks
i'll try again when I get back home tonight.... 1. so when I get an email that I want to erase, I just have to delete (as I did with POP) and use the purge function on OE6 (as Outlook doesn't work)... then the mail will be deleted permanantly from OE6 and from the webmail.... it will be REMOVED from the trash... is that right? 2. Does it use bandwidth when I check my email with outlook express? how much does it use? 3. If I receive a 2 mb email... it will use up in Bandwidth 2mb to upload to fastmail, another 2mb to send to OE, then if I want to delete it, and purge, it will use another 2mb, is that correct??? thanks |

For question 2, checking mail through Outlook Express or any other client will use exactly the same amount of bandwidth as checking it through the web interface. See the relevant FAQ section at http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts...htm#ResWhatBW. Bandwidth is tracked at the IMAP server, whether it's the web interface or an external client that's accessing it. For question 3: Receiving the message and downloading it in Outlook would both use 2mb. Deleting the message wouldn't require bandwidth, since it isn't necessary to download the message again in order to delete it. |

If by checking your mail, you mean simply determining whether you have new messages, no, that doesn't use bandwidth. The FAQ page I referred you to explicitly states that they don't charge bandwidth for downloading headers, which is what you're doing when you check for new mail. |

In IMAP: Delete = mark as deleted: set a \Deleted flag (message usually appears crossed-out). Purge = remove message from server. It is not necessary to move to trash in order to delete a message from an IMAP server. |

As for deletion, I know that's how IMAP works in theory. I try to refrain from assuming that all clients do it that way, though, since mine doesn't. ![]() |

BTW the question was specificallly about OE6, so I didn't focus on implementations of IMAP support in various clients. |

*sigh* I really do need to get OE set up... I hate to let it pollute my system, but it's already on there. I guess if I can justify getting a Hotmail address to see what the Hotmailers see, I can justify setting up OE to see what the OE users see. I'm tired of people (not just on here, friends too) asking me about OE and havnig to reply "No idea, I've never used that thing."
I think I might be the only person left on planet Earth who hasn't. |
