Anyone know how to get Gmail web message list to correctly display in date order?
i.e. without the muddle seen here (EDIT: on search results): https://i.imgur.com/MKDllQa.png (Conversation view OFF).
EDIT: Settings > Inbox > Inbox type is Default. Thanks. Last edited by chrisjj : 3 Nov 2024 at 07:55 AM. |

I assume you are bothered by the first message. I assume it is at the top because Gmail has flagged it as important. See:

I would click on the column header, except of course there is no column header. Disabling display of importance markers leaves the order unchanged: https://i.imgur.com/8v44Mvc.png |

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here.
Is it possible that the sort order is the date/time received and the date displayed is the date that the message was sent? |

Thanks for the thought, but no. The displayed date is the received date. (Which I find wholly unwelcome.) EDIT: Plus in this case the first two messages' date/time received closely match date displayed - and originated i.e. "Date:".

What option are you using at Settings/Inbox/Inbox type?

Further info.
1 On the Gmail Android app, the same occurs. With a twist - the Important column is absent. 2 If I click that Important icon, it is replaced by the Unimportant icon, but even after Gmail Refresh and browser Refresh , the order muddle remains i.e. Oct 27 is above Nov 1. So perhaps the Oct 27 elevation is due to whatever Gmail thought made this important, rather than the fact it was marked as important! Oh dear. 3 Any other search that returns that Oct 27 message and some earlier also shows the muddle e.g. https://i.imgur.com/jHlFQpH.png Stumped. |

I wonder if it has something to do with time zones? In other words, Fastmail support is on the other side of the world for me, so their emails would be sent tomorrow for my time zone. Not sure what Gmail looks at to determine the time/date of email arrival. Do you see this problem with other Gmail searches?

For what it is worth, Fastmail's web client does not have this problem. Yes. I see it on all searches that include the out-of-order messages of my example. I see it on some searches for other messages, but not most. Note: A separate issue arises where a message is snoozed. Search results can show muddled order due to showing the snooze target date in place of the message date, whilst still sorting on the message date: https://i.imgur.com/snoiXzI.png Last edited by chrisjj : 3 Nov 2024 at 09:38 PM. |
