I'm glad to hear it. That will be a great convenience for many users. By the way, to prevent confusion with "aliases," could you just please clarify whether by "this [new] feature" you mean an ability to create what some providers call "personalities," a feature which permits a user to choose among "from" addresses of other existing accounts at a user's non-Openmail providers? And if so, whether the actual originating Openmail account address will still be visible in the headers, or if it will be masked when a message is sent that displays a different "from" address? Thanks.

Also, you mentioned that you intended to offer a search function that would allow searching the text of stored messages for key words. Do you also plan to include this feature in the new interface?

And last, will the new interface, despite offering new features such as those discussed above, still be as fast and simple as it is now? That is one of the main attractions of Openmail (for me, at any rate), and I hope you will preserve that streamlined "feel" in the look and functioning of the new interface. I note that even over a slow connection, the current interface functions with gratifying speed compared to some other providers, and I hope the new interface and new features will not change that for the worse.

Thursday morning the service seems to be down again. Perhaps Ian is trying to get the new interface & IMAP online ? Or just some other service issues ?

You're right. It was Opera 11 giving me problems. FF logged in fine.

Working on the server

I am working on the server, so there could be some down time over the next few days. It should be no more than a few minutes at a time.

Thumbs up

It's always nice for users to have such a warning before it happens. Thanks for the information ahead of time.

Update: after a little playing I found that Opera 11 is having trouble with OpenMail's secure (https) connection. Either that or some issue with the SSL certificate. Opera 11 can access the site via the regular, non-secure address. I even tried manually changing the address (adding the 's') after non-SSL login to see if I could get the secure connection that way, but couldn't.

Again, no trouble with FF.

Okay.... now I am having trouble with FF and the https connection. Regular non-secure connection has no problems with FF or Opera 11.

Perhaps Ian could comment whether this issue has something to do with his present upgrading (IMAP and new interface) or is something different ??

I know he said above, "I am working on the server, so there could be some down time over the next few days. It should be no more than a few minutes at a time." But I don't know if this meant the server would be down entirely (affecting http and https connections) or that only the secure connection would be affected.

Could there be certificate issues ?

Hi, Ian

I know I already mentioned one or two of these in another post, but since you asked here's a small list:

1. Ability to turn off any of the notifications. (For me personally, most of them are unnecessary.)
2. Display the date a message was sent/received. (I believe only sender, subject and attachment display at the moment.)
3. Personally created folders listed in both the folder list drop-down menu and the "move" menu to be in alphabetical order.

A few "no big deal" suggestions:

4. Have folders in the folder drop-down menu show total messages therein.
5. Ability to move messages from the Outbox to specific folders. (I like to keep messages sent to someone in the same folder as messages sent from him/her -- and to have them arranged chronologically, hence my desire for date display.) At present Outbox (i.e. 'sent') messages can only be deleted, not moved. Perhaps this option could be available both in the main Outbox and when viewing any Outbox message.

I realize I/we need to be careful here. With too many suggestions being offered (and implemented) OpenMail would wind up looking more and more like the bigger, more complex providers (like FM) and would lose its 'simple email' charm.

But I do appreciate your openness to user feedback, Ian !!

Self-Signed Certificate

Several people have asked me about the warnings they are getting when they try to log in to OpenMail.cc with SSL. (https). There are two possible reasons. 1) I am using a self-signed certificate and this could create a warning in some browsers, and 2) I have recently changed the certificate, so if you have used https with OpenMail.cc before, you will get a warning.

If you have any doubts about the authenticity of the certificate, I have published the certificate fingerprints on the OpenMail.cc web site.

I hope this helps clear up a few doubts some users have been having.

New IMAP Web Mail

The new web mail is well under way, and I have begun using it with my personal account. The interface looks very much the same, but it is now running on an IMAP engine. There are several new feature, for example, the ability to save attachments with your "draft" and "sent" messages. You can also create personal folders or "labels" as gmail.com calls them.

There is no noticeable speed loss, but this depends very much on your Internet connection, and the load on the server.

I will publish more information once I am satisfied that everything is working as it should. I still need to do some testing. All I can say at the moment, is that reading my mail on my HTC Android, is a real pleasure.

Hi, Ian

Thanks for the update.

As noted above I was having trouble with https. I wasn't even able to get to the homepage to login ! So, in my case, I wasn't even getting as far as being able to see a certificate warning ! (This was on FF and Opera.) But the past couple days it's back to working just fine. Login via https is as smooth as it was before.

OpenMail.cc with IMAP support

I have released a Beta version of the new webmail. Anyone who wants to try it, can find it at http://imap.openmail.cc. Please note that it is not compatible with the present version.

Hi, Ian

Thanks for the update. It looks nice.

I've only looked at it for a few minutes, but have already encountered some issues for you (in random order):

1. When I first logged in all my stored emails were no longer in my created folders. Some were in the inbox; others were in quarantine. I figured I'd just have to move them again. No problem ! But I noticed my personal folders weren't there, so I went into Settings to re-create them. But then I saw the new feature to turn off notifications (thanks !), so I decided to change some of those settings first and clicked 'save.' When I went back to my inbox none of my emails were there anymore ! And my 'quarantine,' which still shows "15" messages on the toolbar, doesn't have any actual messages in it ! Now, I do still have the email messages accessible via the standard interface, but they're nowhere to be found in the new/beta one.

(Edit: when I logout and log back in I still get a notification of having 40 unread messages but they're not there in the Inbox or Quarantine.)

2. Also, I was trying to send myself some test messages to see how it would work reading and replying to them with the new interface. Messages sent out arrived at my Fastmail address, but the messages sent to OpenMail never arrived ! They aren't even there via the standard OpenMail interface.

3. I noticed it's still not possible to send from an alias. I take it you're still working on including that functionality.

4. A minor issue: I noticed that, while composing a test message to be sent from openmail, I filled in the 'to' address and then clicked "tab" expecting the cursor to drop down to the 'subject' box. Instead it skipped the subject box and highlighted the 'clear' button. Perhaps that's a bug ?

5. Back to the folder/label feature: I noticed that you now have labels, but I'm not sure how they relate to folders in your system. In Gmail labels replace folders. In ZoHo mail folders and labels each exist and can be used separately or together. In OpenMail it seems you have "re-labeled" folders as 'labels.' E.g. I went into 'settings' and created a 'folder' for storage which now appears as a 'label' in the drop-down label menu on the inbox page.

I'm not complaining about any of this; just pointing it out. But I'm just curious about how you intend the 'labels' to be used. For example, will I be able to create a storage folder and then put all my stored email in there and give each message a different label ? (I obviously cannot test this for myself yet because of not having my saved mail or incoming mail visible/accessible.)

Btw, even the test email I sent out from OpenMail was not visible in the 'sent' folder.

6. Speaking of which, are you perhaps working on the functionality of allowing 'sent' emails to be moved to other folders ? Or perhaps it would be possible to have -- as implied above -- a folder with all stored emails and have them capable of being labeled in such a way that any labeled 'sent' message will also appear in that stored folder.

I'm wondering because I sometimes would like to be able to read an email 'conversation' and I'd like to avoid having to read an email from a folder, then go to the sent folder to read one, then back to the personal folder to read one, then back to the sent folder to read one, etc. I like to keep 'conversations' (i.e. received and sent emails) together in one folder -- or with one label. Is this something you're still working on ?

7. You mentioned above: "The OpenMail.cc address book will also be preserved in the new version." Are you saying you will be transferring the address book from the standard version to the new version when you feel it's out of beta ? (I noticed my beta address book does not have the addresses from my standard interface. That's not a problem, since I'm in no rush about that. I just thought I'd mention it in case you thought things had already been successfully transferred.)

Thanks again for your work on the new interface. I hope you can get these issues ironed out easily enough.

Hey Ian,

Just tried the new IMAP powered OPENMAIL. I was waiting eagerly for the beta to be released. So far, things are looking great. The new options such as labels, ability to turn off notifications etc. are really great. Had no trouble in reading and writing mail through Mozilla Thunderbird. IMAP and SMTP servers are working perfectly. Would be checking it some more. Thanks for the time and effort you're putting in to provide us with a truely nice Email Service.

Take Care. God Bless Us All!!
