Thumbs up Improved Yahoo! Mail Web

Yahoo! Mail has made some welcome updates to the webmail interface. Mine (paid version) seems to run faster, fewer ads, several nice display and user interface improvements. Really nice in my opinion.

In my opinion yahoo is closing gape to gmail in terms of innovation.
i tried some of the apps in yahoo mail (picnic, zumo drive etc...) it is awesome.
It works like addon ons in firefox, and we know that firefox is so succesfull because of its add ons.

Furtermore yahoo is going to give 25 mb for attachments (closed gape to gmail attachments this way)

Hmm,,,,,,,So it needs Imap (for some , but not for me, webmail has more advantages than a mail client for me) and https.......

Are you referring to the new Yahoo Mail redesign that's been in limited/partial testing for the past 9 months, which has now been announced to gradually roll out in full to all users over the next few months (starting 8/24/2009)?

http://overview.mail.yahoo.com/

http://www.ymailblog.com/blog/2009/0...ed-yahoo-mail/ (Aug 24)

News coverage:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-10316389-265.html

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/08/24...rs-most-event/

Some things I see, in no particular order:

- continued push towards the social email experience is most prominent (especially on the 'What's New' page), catering to the Facebook/Twitter crowd

- streamlined design, removed ads from the left-hand column, expanded section for Applications (which will add more 3rd-party apps such as Evite in addition to existing ones from Picnik, Xoopit, PayPal, etc)

- revamped mobile Yahoo Mail starting with iPhone/Blackberry, other devices next week (plus you can already sync Yahoo Calendar on the iPhone via CalDAV)

- larger 25MB attachment size limit (up to 50 files per message), matching Gmail's new size limit

- installable Yahoo Mail attachment tool (for all browsers) that lets you drag and drop local files/photos and even whole folders from your desktop (!), as well as preview, rotate and resize photo attachments on the spot after they've been uploaded -- see:

http://help.yahoo.com/tutorials/cg/m..._compose4.html

http://help.yahoo.com/tutorials/cg/m...achments5.html

Certainly looks nice, although our accounts haven't been updated yet (although the apps themselves have been available for awhile to some users).

Next year we should see things like more integration with recently acquired Xoopit's photo indexing/sharing, and more importantly, mail re-architecting based on acquired Zimbra technology (!).

My question is, will this be rolled out to Yahoo Business Email accounts as well??

Edit: paul33 beat me to it

If you have the paid version, shouldn't there be no ads?

Is there a way to log on to "ymail" without typing it out?

You are unable to bookmark it and stay logged in? (this is a question as I have not tried it myself)

Correct. They say fewer ads for the free version. I have none.

I was actually pointing out your earlier comment, "Mine (paid version) seems to run faster, fewer ads..". No matter, just seeking clarification.

depends on how much you care for snooping Trojan programs or others that have access to you computer.

I asked the same some time ago and was told how to.

I am a lazy guy so I don't feel for looking it up now and it is an insecure way to do it.

You make a bookmark or a clickable link and that link has all the info which also make it possible to use for others that have legal or illegal access to your computer.

try to copy that one and change username to yours and psw to the one you have and then learn how to make a bookmark link or do as I did. Put it in a html file as a link and then bookmark that html page that you have on your hdd or memstick.

difference is that you are not logged into mail inbox directly but you can click on that one from the general yahoo site page.

BTW, it turns out the new installable Yahoo Mail attachment tool is using Yahoo's BrowserPlus plugin framework, which is Yahoo's more varied answer to Google Gears (both open source).

Choice quotes about BrowserPlus:
Quote:
BrowserPlus is a technology for web browsers that allows developers to create rich web applications with desktop capabilities.
...
Different websites can use BrowserPlus to support things like drag and drop from the desktop, multiple file uploads [with zipping], more efficient and secure acquisition of feeds and information, and native desktop notifications.

[Other services thus far include persistent local storage a la Google Gears, in-place image editing, native text-to-speech interface, support for laptop accelerometer motion sensors, and peer-to-peer file transfer.]
...
The most unique attribute of BrowserPlus is its ability to update and add new services on the fly without a browser restart or even reloading the page! As a user, this means no more installers to run or losing your place on the web. [ie. people can let Web sites add new abilities without having to restart their browsers. Right now, though, only Yahoo may supply the plug-ins.]
...
Developers interested in writing wholly new services for BrowserPlus can also join the fray. Our developer section has full documentation, tools, and tutorials

Firefox also has other alternatives. For example you can use the remember password bookmarklet which is a one-time ordeal. Click it once before you enter the username/password, and you'll have the option to remember the info for all future logins. Description:
Quote:
Some sites, including many banks and a few other sites such as Yahoo Mail and Microsoft Passport, tell browsers not to remember passwords for visitors using autocomplete="off". This bookmarklet makes the browser ignore this temporarily [...]

If you install the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox, you can also add various user scripts for Yahoo sites, such as:

- Yahoo Autocomplete On: lets Firefox remember Yahoo login info (like the above bookmarklet), and unchecks the "Keep me signed in" button

- No Yahoo Home on Yahoo Mail Signout: stops Yahoo Mail from redirecting you to Yahoo home page when you sign out, you get redirected to the Yahoo Mail login page instead

- Yahoo Mail Ad Removal: hides ads from lefthand folder column and righthand sidebar (which the Adblock Plus extension can already do), but this script also expands the message display space in place of the ad sidebar

- Yahoo Login - Clean (a CSS style that can also be loaded as a user script): strips the Yahoo Mail login page to only show the login box centered on screen, and nothing else

Of course, there's a good chance that some or all of these user scripts won't work on the new Yahoo Mail redesign being rolled out now, at least until the respective script authors update them.

Generically speaking I am hesitant to adopt the new features of the "Big" providers without prolonged consideration. I am admittedly very much more likely to avail myself of Gmail's features than those of Hotmail or Yahoo. The effectiveness of Gmail's Spam filtering over that of either Hotmail or Yahoo has an implied Customer Consideration for Gmail over that of the later two. A judgement call on my part of course.

Having been an Oddpost customer in the past and thus transferred to yahoo (when it was purchased by Yahoo) I am always hopefull that I will some day Log in to Yahoo and be shocked at the stunning new interface developed and Spam filtering now in evidence, but that has never presented itself. I can always hope.

The Yahoo Browser Plus Feature is another in a line of features that is (from a consumers point of view) hopeful, but otherwise, not overly significant from my personal point of view.

Beq: I have observed your continued use (I assume for your Customers) of Yahoo over time.
It is just a minor question, but is this a result of your professional judgement of the quality of Yahoo's services or a reaction your customers request's.

Oddpost was the only service that made me regret leaving Windows O/S for Linux

thanks, yeah i am not a fan of those. i dont like to store anything anywhere. i was hoping yahoo would change the log on page to allow a drop down for @ymail and @rocketmail as well as the @yahoo. right now with a "yahoo" id you type in the id and password. If you have a "ymail" you need to type out id + @ymail. To me thats just annoying. Same with @live or @hotmail. In this day and age why cant they add a simple drop down box? The have them when you sign up.......?
