New photogallery implemented on beta server
With Neils great work implementing a new photo gallery mockup (http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=50097), I've now gone and implemented the actual work to generate these for users real photo galleries.
Currently it's only on the beta server, so you have to use a special syntax to access it. Basically if your current photo gallery URL is: http://myphotos.myname.fastmail.fm/albumname/ Then to access it via the beta server you use: http://www.fastmail.fm/userdirsb/myp....fm/albumname/ As an example, try this link which is a real link to a photo gallery that works: http://www.fastmail.fm/userdirsb/tes...m.fastmail.fm/ That should show any existing photo galleries you have using the new style. A couple of issues still: 1. This replaces the existing 2 photo gallery styles, though the Files -> Websites screen hasn't been changed yet. I'm not planning on supporting the existing gallery styles, I intend this new one to completely replace the existing ones because it's a pain to maintain the two code sets side by side, and I believe the new one is just much cleaner and better than the old one in every way. 2. There's a weird bug (at least in Firefox) which you click the Grid link, it forces a redownload of the html or gets the subdir wrong, which looses the current thumbnail size information. I need to speak with Neil about that Rob |

Still doesn't work well for me. I reported this in Neils thread. Anyway, when clicking on a single picture it only loads about ½ way or less. It puts me at the bottom of the screen with mostly a black screen with a piece of the picture above. Scrolling up is where I see about ½ of it.

Stunning. Can't wait till this goes live.
Clicking on single images seems to load ok from my work pc.[Windows 5.1 I.E. 6] I occassionally get 'Page Not Found' though. Maybe the fact that my galleries use www as the prefix (and there's already a www in the special syntax url) confuses things? http://www.fastmail.fm/userdirsb/www.username.fastmail.fm/albumname Seems to work fine on test galleries with a different prefix. Abydos: If you can reproduce the problem, email me at robm AT fastmail DOT fm with a link to your site and a description of how to reproduce the problem and I'll check it out.

While putting together an email of links... I think I suddenly realised what's causing the problem. Something to do with that trailing slash at the end... As long as the url has that trailing slash, It all seems to work fine. http://www.fastmail.fm/userdirsb/www.username.fastmail.fm/albumname/ http://www.fastmail.fm/userdirsb/albumname.username.fastmail.fm/ |

Once I started a slide-show, I couldn't find any way to stop it. Eventually, when I clicked on Grid, I got a Page Not Found. This was using the demo you (Rob) linked to.

Hey Jeff, you should be able to stop the slide show by clicking on the picture (a pause button will appear in the middle). The same thing happens to me for the Grid though.

It looks very nice, but I find the fade-in-fade-out effect annoying. Is there any way to turn it off or to speed it up considerably? Also, is there any way to let users viewing the gallery decide for themselves if they want to turn it off?

1. I think the blue title bar (which displays f.i. the album name) is much too large, especially on a 1024x768 screen. Also the used font.
2. When showing a photo the titlebar now displays the filename of the photo. In the 'old' photo gallery it displays the (added) comment. I appreciate the last. 3. Clicking on next, previous, start or pause my screen displays very quick a rectangle across the photo. Not really nice looking. But for the rest: great work! |

Sherry: Neil is looking into it, seems to be an odd IE6 bug with only the first image displayed
Abydos: The trailing / and redirect issues should be fixed now Berenburger: The title bar on the single/filmstrip page has been shrunk a bit. The image comment now appears at the bottom, a "pretty" version of the filename is shown at the top. The reload problem when clicking "Grid" should be fixed to. Rob |

We've made a number of updates to this.
1. Fixed lots of little bugs 2. Sherry - it should work fine on IE6 now, can you please test and report 3. Improved caching, so if you go back to a gallery you've been to recently, it should load pretty fast 4. Thumbnail size slider state is saved in a cookie, so when you move between galleries or come back later, it should remember the slider size position 5. When you're in a sub-gallery, you get a "Back to (gallery name)" link to go up to the previous gallery 6. The links in the "Download" popup menu now prompt to save to disk rather than viewing in the browser I think that's about it for now. I'd really appreciate if people could test with any photo galleries they have available and any browsers they have installed. I'd like to roll this new gallery out sometime soon if possible ![]() Rob |

The first picture (and the rest) load fine now. The first picture (only) does have strange characters on mouse over and in the blue bar across the top. The wording below the picture is ok.

Sorry, I don't fully understand the temporary URL mapping I should use to see the new photo gallery software working on existing photos I have in my files area.
Currently I have a fastmail sub website in the following format. http://album.<alias>.sent.com/ which is a mapping from: {My Files}/album What do I need to enter as a URL for the beta photo software? One tiny thing I notice on the new photo gallery is that when I press within a picture the Next (->), Previous (<-) or Play|Pause (||) icons I can see, very briefly, the dividers within the picture. (this is using Firefox 5.0). Is there any way of eliminating this flickering effect? Ed |
