.COM is the best known TLD and therefore the default, the one everyone remembers and assumes.
No doubt in my mind that .COM is the easiest TLD for others to understand, therefore the best, unless you want to express a national identity. |

Personally, I prefer .NET.
I consider .COM is preferable for a business, however. Where ever possible, I have registered both TLD's for myself. |

NameSurname.com seems perfectly legitimate to me.
I do own a .pw (Professional Web) domain with my name because it was cheap and it amused me, but I'm not sure anyone takes it seriously. |

Though I would prefer .com, because of scarcity, I actually use a .net and a .ca domain name.

I use both a .COM and .NET for with my domain names that I use for e-mail purposes.
I may get an additional domain name with .ME or .INFO soon though too. David |

I prefer .net to .com, but even better are the country domains - particularly ones like .me, .io and .ly

Seriously?! .co.uk sucks - almost every other country has the domain without the .co. The only exception I can think of that uses the unecessary .co. is South Africa, which is .co.za. It would be far better to have just .uk, which is already an option: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25006066

I don't sell anything, so .com is not my best choice, .org is.
