Yes, but not with any of the companies that advertise overpriced VPN service.

I go to lowendbox.com, find a VPS (virtual private server) service in the location I need, preferably from a relatively reputable provider. I purchase a tiny server that costs $10-20 per year, and install a VPN program on it. Sometimes, the server provider even has a server template with VPN already set up.

Pro: It's cheap. I have complete control over how the VPN works. The server's IP address is extremely unlikely to be recognized as a VPN, because it doesn't belong to any of the well-known VPN services.

Con: Needs technical knowledge. You get your very own IP address, so you can't hide among the crowd. The server provider will kick your *** out as soon as they find out that you're doing anything illegal.

It says:

"You can protect yourself by utilizing the strong encryption while using public Wi-Fi"

It doesn't say how you can protect yourself from the total stranger running the VPN server.

Avast AV are offering a VPN, has anyone here tested it? I use their free AV and it seems to be effective.
