While I don't know the exact technical basis for it in any given case, it seems fairly common for Google/Gmail and other websites to use "redirects", and as it appears to be an "internal" redirect to a google.com address, I don't know if there's any reason to suspect a virus or anything else of a "nefarious" nature involved in this case. Or, to put it differently, as far as I know it's working exactly as it's supposed to work and it isn't really a "problem" at all.
Edit: Perhaps I should have said that as long as you're able to access your email as usual and everything else seems "normal", then it's probably nothing to be concerned about. If everything else doesn't seem "normal", then of course there may be a problem, whether or not the redirection may have anything to do with it. Last edited by xmailer : 12 Jul 2008 at 05:38 AM. |

Problem
Thank you for the reply. I did not provide enough detail in my original post. The problem is I cannot access my gmail account as I have normally done. The "redirecting" that occurs when I try to access my account goes on forever and "times out". So I then have to search for gmail on google and select one of the options which will allow me into my account but once inside everything "looks different". Also I can no longer delete old emails or spam. Another problem is when I compose an emal the contact does not appear once I type in the first letter or two, things just are not working as well. I have copied the ttp which comes up when it redirects and posted it below. Thanks again

Yes, that sounds a little more "problematic", although again, I don't know whether or not the "redirect" as such is a relevant factor in those problems. Seeing intermittent issues with various features not working for periods of time in Gmail's "perpetual beta" may not be highly unusual, as I've seen happen with various features in my own Gmail accounts numerous times, and I specifically recall that at least a time or two the address "autocomplete" function seemed non-operational, but as best I can recall that problem cleared up by my next login.
As for the URL, I also get what I guess would be considered a "redirect" address when I go to the login page, which changes somewhat upon logging in, somewhat similar to what you've copied here, except not quite as long (although it does contain a long string of seemingly random characters, similar to yours), although mine starts out: http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1&auth=DQAAAHE...etc... rather than the https://www.google.com/accounts/Serv... which yours begins with, although your guess is as good as mine what the difference is based on, except that I know the "?ui=1" part in my address is based on the login address I have bookmarked/favorited as: http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1 in order to "force" a login to the older Gmail interface, which is more compatible with my older system and somewhat slow connection. How much that may affect the overall difference in the "redirect" URL, I don't know, but if you haven't already tried it, you could try the above and various other login URL's (which others here may specifically recall better then myself) to see if they make any difference in your login and the operation of your account. Otherwise, about all I can think to offer is somewhat "generic" advice, such as clearing your browser cookies and cache (and possibly running one or more additional anti-spyware/adware programs, to be safe/thorough). And have you tried logging in with a different browser, eg, FireFox versus IE (or vice versa) or whichever? Otherwise, pending any other thoughts or suggestions anyone else may have to offer here of course, with as many problems as you're having with your account, if none of this helps, your best hope might be to attempt to contact Gmail support to see if they can look into whether there may be problems with your account which only they might be able to properly diagnose and fix. Problem Solved
Thanks for all the suggestions for restoring my g-mail to it's original format. I changed browsers from Internet Explorer to FireFox and that seemed to dot the trick. Thanks again

Glad to hear that something worked. Appreciate your update, as often new members post problems/questions and never return to let anyone know whether or not their problems were ever solved, so we never learn whether we've helped them or helped create even bigger problems for them.
