files interface

Files control is all weird in the new interface. How do I view a stored file?
Under the classic interface all I did was click on it. Now when I click on it
I get a 'view' option, which makes sense, and when I click on that all I get
is this text: "Session expired, please close and re-open the page." What does
that mean? What do I do now?

Also, how do I copy a list of names into the To: or -- specifically -- the
Bcc: field? The old interface made this very easy. This is a big priority for
me.

By 'list of names' I mean the list of addresses that control the distribution of
mailing lists.

How do I get a list of the addresses in a mailing list? If I could get that I
could go to some other provider, at least temporarily, but so far I can
just find each address one at a time. There seems to be no way for
me to access a single copyable file with all the addresses. It must be there
somewhere, but where?

Fred

Fred, when you click on a file you should see links at the right to Download or View the file. When I click View I get a large (most of the window) rendering of the image (or the non-image file content). This works with at least these file types:
  • JPG image
  • PNG image
  • BMP image
  • GIF image
  • TXT text
  • HTML web page
  • PDF document
  • MP3 audio file
  • AU audio file
  • WAV audio file
This works for me in:
  • Firefox (Windows 10)
  • Chrome (Windows 10)
  • Edge (Windows 10)
  • Safari (iOS on iPad)
If you continue to get that error, I would suggest:
  • Trying a different browser, and be sure it's updated to the latest version
  • Disabling all browser add-ons
  • Filing a Fastmail support request

This usually indicates an issue with the browser cache, or a corrupted cookie.

As Bill explains, usually, a different browser will fix the issue.

To use you existing browser, sign out from Fastmail, clear the browser cache and cookies for fastmail.com, then sign in and retry. If it still fails, try using your browser's "safe" mode as an add-on might be affecting things.

Arrow Email groups and Distribution Lists

The distribution of mailing lists in Fastmail is done using Address Book Groups.
  • To create or remove Groups, go to Settings>Address Book>Groups. Click Create Group at the top to create one or more groups.
  • Then go to the Address Book and add as many contacts as you wish to that group. A contact can belong to several groups. You can add contacts to a group in various ways:
    • Select All contacts to see all of your contacts.
    • To select more than one contact select them using the checkboxes to the left of each contact.
    • Then drag one or more contacts to the group.
    • Or after you select one or more contacts, use the Groups button at the top to add or remove those contacts from a group.
  • In the Compose screen, click show or hide Cc or Bcc in the upper right (near the More tool) as needed to get the proper addressing fields displayed.
  • To see your groups, enter groups in an addressing field. This shows the first 10 groups. You can also enter the name of a group, or a combination (such as test groups to find the group named test). You don't have to type the complete name, so for example I can enter tes gro to find my group named "test". You just need to differentiate between the group name and any matching contact name.
  • Once you see the group you want to use, either click it or use the up/down arrows to select it and use the Enter key. All members of that group will be shown in the addressing field.
  • You can then select all of the addresses in that addressing field (using CTL-A or right-click Select All) and copy or cut those addresses into your paste buffer.
You can also create a distribution list alias email address which you and others can use as follows:
  • In Settings>Aliases, create a new alias. Enable Also deliver to all contacts in and select the desired Address Book Group. Click Save at the top when finished.
  • Now any email arriving at that alias (from you or from external senders) will be distributed (automatically forwarded) to all members of that group.

I agree that this is most likely the cause.

Possibly related: disabling 3rd party cookies in the browser prevents the Edit option from working properly with files. It may cause other weird behavior too.

You are most welcome, Fred. Most of this is in the help - I just put it all together in more of a tutorial format. I use address book groups and distribution lists all the time, so they are a very important Fastmail feature for me. See the basic instructions by going to Fastmail help and searching for: Distribution+list
