Labels missing in Trash

When an email is deleted to Trash its labels are removed and it can't be found when advanced searching labels with "include spam/trash" ticked. I've had to revert to folders because of this behaviour, is there a reason for it?

I am unclear why folders helps you. The message is either in a folder or in Trash. Certainly, messages in Archive should retain their labels, but a deleted message is, well, deleted. If you want to remove a single label from a message, then do that. If you delete a message, it seems to me quite illogical to expect it to be both deleted and not deleted.
