It's official:

Yahoo sells Zimbra to VMware (CNET)

VMware Buys Zimbra From Yahoo (All Things Digital)

Quote:
VMware said it will “purchase all Zimbra technology and intellectual property. Yahoo! will have the right to continue to utilize the Zimbra technology in its communications services, including Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Calendar."
Quote:
...the reason VMware was interested in nabbing Zimbra is that its execs want to expand “up the stack” from the software company’s position in virtualization.

And Yahoo is no longer interested in running Zimbra’s white-label, open-source email commercial product, which serves the university and ISP markets. There, its main rival has been Google.

Good point. Doubt that they'll remove this feature from Zimbra Desktop though. The architecture is not in place, and it has nothing to do with Zimbra on the server side.

you are right mvip, but the question is not if zimbra will provide this feature (of course they want to, since yahoo mail have the most mail users worlwide), it is more the question
if yahoo will allow it.

Why they should allow it to zimbra and not for thunderbird to access yahoo mail by imap for example??

From the CNET article linked to by beq.

Zimbra makes e-mail and office collaboration software, and some parts of its technology will continue to stay within Yahoo as part of Yahoo Mail and Calendar, Zimbra's Jim Morrisroe, vice president of sales, said in a blog post Tuesday afternoon.
My interpretation of this is that the Zimbra Desktop Client will still provide IMAP access to Yahoo accounts. That's just my guess of course.

I wonder if this will be a good thing?

VMWare is not exactly in the email business. I do, however, see this as a good thing that it is no longer being managed by Yahoo....

I think this can turn out great. Yahoo was never the right company to manage and own Zimbra to start with anyways. Imagine the killer combo of a fine tuned virtualized email appliance combined with VMware's architecture.

VMware has said that Zimbra will further its "mission of simplifying IT." Zimbra will also beef up VMware's offerings to its vCloud hosting partners, by adding a software-as-a-service (SaaS) component to its existing IT infrastructure and application-development-platform hosted services, according to VMware.
