Fastmail contacts: "Categories vs tags/groups"?

I've been having trouble with syncing Contact groups/tags with BusyContacts. Talking to their tech support folk, they tell me that they have discovered that there is an issue because Fastmail CardDav supports both "Categories" and "Groups/tags." They have been treating these two things as the same, and that's the issue they need to fix.

I've never heard of "Categories" with respect to FastMail contacts. Are there two different ways of categorizing a given FM contact (i.e., the contact is a member of a "group" as well as some other categorization method)?

Just guessing, but I suspect that Fastmail might support categories in the background. I'm inferring this from what's said here: Troubleshooting CardDAV fields

I have synced Fastmail with BusyContacts for years will little-to-no problems. I don't know why it is working for me and not for you though.

I don’t know, either. But I can say that BusyMac support was fabulous! My issue was escalated within 24 hours, and the “lead developer” there started corresponding with me. He asked questions, and created a beta for me to try. When that didn’t resolve the issue, within 24 hours he got back to me with another beta, and that fixed things.

It was a comment he made about FM’s CardDav server supporting both “categories” and “groups/tags” (which apparently is not typical) that led to my question. He also said that the challenge was how to fix things for FM users without breaking things for other users who sync with different CardDav servers. But apparently he figured that out, because all is good for me now.
