client won't expunge deleted messages

As a matter of fact, I have tried different clients, but it seems that the only way to actually get rid (yes, permanently) of messages is through the web interface.

Yes, I do use the command 'expunge', or 'compact' in the client, whatever the case may be. The deleted messages seem to disappear, but come back as soon as I refresh the view.

Is that by design?

Have you checked your Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings?
  • Status: Enable/disable IMAP
  • When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:
    • Auto-Expunge on
    • Auto-Expunge off
  • When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
    • Archive the message (default)
    • Move the message to the Trash
    • Immediately delete the message forever

Hmm.. Sounds promising, but I just went to that page, and I don't see anything but (1) Enable/Disable IMAP, and (2) Configure your email client.

Edit: my bad - I never got to see those, as I've been using basic HTML - had to switch to standard view.

Thank you very much.

Edit:
Only, expunged messages keep reappearing
