Wildfires in Australia

I found out today that Melbourne, where FastMail is headquartered, was affected by the wildfires in Australia. I hope that the FastMail staff are OK.

Melbourne is a long way from the fires

They might appear to be close to Melbourne on maps or TV, but the fires are a few hundred km from Melbourne.

That's odd. I live in Melbourne and this is not in the local news. There was a relatively small fire in the suburbs last week, but it was over within a day.

Melbourne is still a long way from the big fires of the past couple of weeks.

(It is hazy today and has been, on and off, from smoke. The smoke does carry long distances, though. They're even copping it in New Zealand.)

I just re-read the DW article and it is referring to last week's fire in Bundoora. (The same one I mentioned above.)
