Of course how can you ever know that even if an email company says that your information is totally private that is really the case? Especially in the case of smaller, more obscure email providers, like some of the ones written about on this forum, it would be impossible to know if the person or persons in charge aren't simply reading through your emails for fun and profit.

And what about the encrypted ones, like Tutanota or Protonmail?
Ok, ok, they are not small and obscure.

I suspect they are probably doing their best, but how do you know there isn't some backdoor that allows them to unencrypt anything they want to? Is there some sort of independent testing organization that checks these things out and provides some sort of guarantee?

It would be stupid if there wasnt.... They own the service .. They really have a right to see whats being said over thier own network....
