AUTH LOGIN problems

Some time back I wrote a sample application to send email through gMail & Hotmail. I had not used either of them to send emails for a while, and when I recently tried I kept getting an authentication failure. After some extensive searching, I discovered that PLAIN authentication no longer works by default. It appears that both Google and Microsoft are trying to push people to use Web access. I was able to get gMail working by enabling "less secure Apps", and have not investigated Hotmail as yet. When one sends the EHLO to gMail, the response is:
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN XOAUTH XOAUTH2 PLAIN-CLIENTTOKEN
PLAIN doesn't work by default, both dual password and OAUTH are a real pain in the butt to use, and I can't find a lot of information about PLAIN-CLIENTTOKEN.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for PLAIN-CLIENTTOKEN?
