I remember when mob was just a large group of folks, not always with evil intent. Later on it referred to mobsters, like the mob, I think popularize by the God Father like movies. Later it changed to a group of folks who set out to do something, as in flash mob, not always bad either. Like a flash mob concert. Now it seems to refer to a group ood of folks intent on doing bad things.

A "mob" in the USA is definitely not something you want to be part of. In some cases it can just be too many people: "The bar was mobbed after the event." In other cases, it can be a dangerous group of people: "The mob then ascended the capitol steps." In still another meaning, it can be slang for organized crime: "The illegal liquor trade in Chicago was controlled by the mob."
