Pobox Basic
Customers subscribed to Pobox Basic plan will be migrated to the Fastmail Lite plan. This plan comes with IMAP/POP/SMTP access, webmail access, 500 MB of mail storage quota per user, and up to 60 aliases. You'll also get calendars and contacts on the web & Fastmail app, plus 100 MB of file storage.

We've added a bonus to the Fastmail Lite plan for Pobox customers: if you have a custom domain on your Pobox account, you will be able to continue using your domain at Fastmail at no extra cost. You can upgrade to a Fastmail Standard plan if you?d like to add more domains.

This plan will cost $24 per year.

Anyway though this is maybe a upgrading for all pobox users, but I keep liking the classic pobox forwarding features.

I am surprised that for pobox basic account,
the incoming messages don?t reach into mailbox,
which is provided by FM for free.
So what?s the usage of that mailbox and webmail?

Do forwarded messages have storage restriction?
I'm asking this because some of my incoming emails do have quite big attachments...

Cloudflare's Email Routing service does not support messages larger than 25 MiB.

Probably this just means an alias has only an external target. So adding the inbox as an additional target would keep a copy in the mailbox.
I guess Fastmail setup the migrated accounts to work as close as possible to their previous settings in Pobox. So if they only forwarded messages they don't keep a copy.

(Another possibility is that the target is the inbox, and then there are Sieve rules that forward and don't keep a copy).

I have no way to setup mails to be delivered into FM inbox.
They can be forwarded only.
But FM does provide a mailbox for pobox basic acct.

This is all a bit of a shock - what's the story behind this move? Merging the two email services seems to be adding a lot of complexity with no obvious benefits for customers. Does this mean increased costs/subscriptions?

Fastmail doesn't have the greatest reputation in this area does it? What are the downsides here?

It makes sense for Fastmail. One set of infrastructure instead of two. Probably consolidating staff functions in one location or another. Probably reduced costs overall. For example, they will eventually disable the POBox.com website and not have to maintain it or market it. I suspect the move will be fine for some POBox customers and not so good for others. Jeffpan, for example, will miss the pure forwarding option for multiple domains of POBox Basic at only $20 per year. In general, I think it is a good thing when companies simplify their offerings. I'd rather have just a few really good products that are well supported.

what I like for classic pobox:

1. solid forwarding
2. free smtp relay
3. domain hosting

But now days there seem are many alternatives to pobox, like forwardemail and simplelogin. So keeping a simple forwarding service has no much core competitiveness today. But fastmail is always one of the best email services on this world. Focusing on developing Fastmail may be a wise choice.

Anyway I'd say sorry to pobox, which I have used for 15 years.
A legendary brand fell from this time.
