I was testing my iPad Bluetooth keyboard. When I type an apostrophe or quote character it shows that character in the EMD editing window. But when it posts a ? character is shown at that location. I have verified this is due to the hardware keyboard (and perhaps a change made when Apple introduced iPadOS 17).

After I post if I edit my post, there is no issue. The hardware keyboard can create the ' and " characters properly in the EMD edit-an-existing-post mode. So it might also be a "bug" at EMD. I think the blame should be shared.

If I use my iPad on-screen keyboard there is no problem. I think I should be able to switch back and forth, only using the on-screen keyboard for a few punctuation characters.

I sent this post using my Windows PC, a laptop with integrated keyboard. It does not have any of these issues.

I've noticed that EMD changes some emoji characters to pairs of question marks in diamond shapes (like this: ) unless I do a preview before submitting. Might that have some connection with the issue you are investigating?

My guess is that it?s a combination of how the current version of iPadOS operating system I am using (version 17.7.2, the latest I can use on this iPad Pro) interprets my Bluetooth keyboard, combined with inconsistent behavior of the EMD Forum code (which is probably an old version of VBulletin). I don?t expect us to get bug fixes to this forum.

I don’t get this problem on my PC, or when I edit a post (as I am in this paragraph) and add ‘ or “ characters. It’s only in my initial post which is committed that the issue exists, and it’s gone on new text I enter when I open up the post and edit it (such as this paragraph).

All very strange! Sometimes I think computers are haunted! If you don't get to the bottom of it I hope you find a reasonable workaround.
Out of curiosity, does the phenomenon I described (characters such as 🔍 or 🕊 being converted to unless I do a preview before posting) happen for you, too, or do the internet ghosts have it in for me in particular?

EDIT. It's not as simple as I thought. When I submit a reply to a post without previewing it, the emojis come out OK, If I then edit the reply and submit it without previewing it, each of them is converted to . But if I click on "Go advanced" and then edit the reply, they come out correctly, even if I don't do a preview first.

I'm not usually inserting emojis. So I have no idea.

I’m not using a bluetooth keyboard here. Just the onscreen keyboard with my iPad Air 2022 with IOS 18.1.
Something strange going on.

I noticed this many times, but I never tried to figure out exactly what the steps to reproduce it are. It might have something to do with Unicode support (The forum pages do not use some Unicode encoding, so input characters that are not included in Latin-1 have to be converted to html entities at some stage).
Another thing that sometimes happen to me is that upper case letters that I type are sometimes converted to lowercase when I post. It seems to be connected to either using emoji characters or one of the post editing options.

Html

I typed HTML (all caps) in the first line, then clicked "Preview Post" and it was converted to Html.

Ad Astra Html Bill

This is very strange. If I enter the above line in ALL CAPS and post it, it is converted to mixed case. If I then open it up for editing my post, I can’t change it to all caps! But after adding this additional text and posting, I can open it back up for editing and change it to all caps. As I had suspected, it’s unreliable with a complex behavior.

In this post I entered four consecutive capital letters, and in the nest line six times this character (Unicode codepoint U+1F4B0) using size=7: 💰
When I posted all four letters became lowercase. The Unicode picture chacter was displayed.
Then I tried to edit the post and capitalize the letters. after editing and previewing and posting the letters became lowercase again, and each picture character turned into two consecutive question marks.
I tried editting several times (with and without previewing) each time leaving those question marks and adding a new line of six copies of the picture, and each time the uppercase letters were reverted to lowercase, and each of the new picture characters was changed into two consecutive question mark characters.

My guess it?s corrupted code on the server. It appears to me that the behavior has degraded over time. I don?t remember it acting this badly a year or two ago.
