We all know that, some time ago, Fastmail achieved its long-term aim of acquiring the fastmail.com domain (indeed, that is now its main domain).

I have been reading the blog, and they have now also acquired the fastmail.ca domain (which coincidentally was started at about the same time as fastmail.fm). I think the blog mentioned fastmail.org as well.

Time to go after the Greek one? Are there any other ones remaining?

Fastmail does not own the .gr domain (it's owned by someone else), but they own many other fastmail.xxx domains which you can use for aliases. Many of these are assigned codes for countries (such as .de), but there are a large number of domain names starting with fastmail and ending with a country code which are not assigned or are assigned to non-fastmail groups.Fastmail offers:

• fastmail.co.uk
• fastmail.com.au
• fastmail.de
• fastmail.es
• fastmail.fm
• fastmail.fr

• fastmail.in

• ... and many others ...

Of course, you can also just purchase an unused domain (such as fastmail.fun) and use it with a Fastmail Standard or higher (or old Enhanced or higher) domain.

At time of writing, the fastmailsucks.com domain is still available to register.

That should be popular with some here on the forum.

yes, the original post from Fastmail mentions fastmail.ca, but I still don't see it as an option in choosing aliases.

Any idea why? Or when it might become available?

Why? Because it belongs to somebody else.
When? The current registration expires mid-June 2017. Of course the owner may renew it.

Fastmail say different:

But strangely they're not shown as the owner:

Although the servers point to Fastmail's messagingengine domain.

If you read the blog entry, the FastMail.ca owner closed down his service and sold it to FastMail Pty. His customer accounts were transferred to our FastMail:

FastMail Pty in Australia probably doesn't want to allow new signups to that domain until old customer accounts are accommodated or expire. The domain registration is currently in the grace period of the registrar, and I assume that it is being transferred between registrars.

We actually had a discussion about fastmail.ca over here after FastMail first announced it, in which Bron confirmed that they're still basically accommodating users who have chosen not to migrate their accounts to the "real" FastMail.

As the blog post noted, only fastmail.ca users "who elected to move" were migrated, so presumably some have stayed on the old service for now; Fastmail.ca's announcement suggests that if users "do not opt to migrate, [their] account[s] will lapse and be deleted," so presumably at some point FastMail will cut over the fastmail.ca domain, although I suspect that's more dependent on when paid users' accounts expire at "Fastmail Canada" rather than the actual domain name expiry.

So it seems what's happening right now is that fastmail.ca still points to the old "Fastmail Canada" so that mail can be delivered to legacy mailboxes on those systems first. I'm guessing that there's a catch-all forward to send anything not deliverable to a legacy fastmail.ca mailbox to be handed off to the "real" FastMail. Obviously it would be far more complicated to try and hand out aliases on that domain right now, as FastMail would have make sure that they weren't trampling on any legacy accounts that are still on the old system.

"Fastmail Canada" also owned fastmail.org, but as Bron also pointed out, that one had no users on it, so FastMail was able to set that one up as an alias right away.

I don't think that's correct. Fastmail.ca MX records currently point to the same in1-smtp.messagingengine.com 66.111.4.xx (NYI) and in2-smtp.messagingengine.com 185.68.120.xx (NL) servers as FastMail.com (and the other Fastmail domains). The A records also cause http://FastMail.ca to redirect to the Fastmail.com website.
