Tags and Labels - How much longer will it be?
Hi
The issue of FM's email search seems to have come up time and again. Competitors use tags/labels to allow people to organize their emails (e.g. Gmail) or BOTH folders and tags/labels (e.g. Zoho). After a year of using FM, I have far too many emails to organize using a folder system only. When... please tell me... will FM have tags/labels? It's clearly a popular request. Could we at least have an estimate or even a comment about whether it's being worked on? Thanks. |

I believe that there are ways to use custom flags with Fastmail using the Thunderbird interface. This does not help for the webmail interface, I realize. It does also not help for me, using Outlook.
Outlook 2010 may have the support for custom flags, but I cannot verify this at the moment. Custom Flags (as I believe they are referred to in the IMAP Spec.) would be a nice addition. |

Thanks for the suggestions, but webmail is a necessity for me.
I simply don't understand two things: 1. Why don't FM give their users tags/labels for organizing emails? 2. Why don't they comment about whether this is a priority for them or not and why? Certainly at least 2 doesn't require that much effort. |

There are dozens of feature requests that come through these forums, and Fastmail doesn't usually comment on them, but I do think this is a worthy feature.
However, in priority, I believe Contacts Sync (SyncML) Calendar Sync (SyncML) are higher on my personal list of features. I've been asking for these for maybe 5 years now. /cl |

Also, If you are using Thunderbird, I believe lables are sync'd. I believe I tried thunderbird and verified this about 8 months ago... The only problem is that it is not available in the web interface. |

The other features that should be improved is the search function. It's clunky and you need to specify folders, etc.
Fastmail is clearly amazing, but when you think about, there are some really backwards things too: -the lack of a good search function, -the lack of labels/tags for emails -the interface for organizing folders (creating new ones, moving existing ones, etc.) is very, very clumsy and clunky. There are other features, like calendar, etc. But the above list are, I think, ABSOLUTE BASICS for an email service, no? Basic organization of emails and the ability to search them? Come on, FM! China Lamb, when you say that you've been asking for a feature for 5 years, does that mean you think FM are particularly unresponsive to feature requests? I saw some comments that the present FM software or interface makes it hard for them to implement labels/tags. Anyone know if this is true? |

I do wish they'd get a vision for calendar and sync'd address books tho - those are the requests I've been placing for the last many years. Fastmail cannot implement everything that is requested, but they have implemented countless new features that I and others have requested over the years. |

Here's hoping that the Opera acquisition will provide the extra resources to make FM the full PIM stack we've been asking for for these many years now.

Tags and Labels YES PLEASE
I'd like to add my name to the list of people who want to be able to categorise emails by more than just folders. I've become a Webmail user so anywhere I can get connected I get exactly the same experience - but I do feel restricted by the lack of ways to mark emails.
I'd also like a follow-up feature. Perhaps this could be integrated into calendar development. It's quite common for me to send an email and (want to) set myself a reminder so I can follow up with the individual. And sometimes I receive an email I'm not going to deal with today, but I'd like to remind myself to work on it on, e.g., a week on Thursday. I just can't do that in Fastmail unless I set up folders that are all about email task management and not about their content. And it's very tedious having to create folders with date strings. So, please please please implement labels, categories and date-based follow-up. Thanks, Chris |

Yes, one would think that the Opera people would like to see some common features with mail-on-opera and Fastmail; Opera 11 has improved label features.

They may not be that simple if they try to be compatible with several desktop clients that implement them in incompatible ways. Google seem to have not been able to make its Gmail labels system compatible with IMAP clients that have labels (instead they made a clumsy mapping of labels to folders, duplicating any message that has multiple labels applied). FastMail has much less programming resource than Google.
