I have a Member account that I would like to temporarily disable. Is this possible?

Thanks!

Welcome to the EMD Forums, flashbeagle!

Yes, you can temporarily disable an account (as if you were going on vacation). Here are the instructions:
  • Go to the Options > Define Rules screen.
  • Scroll down on the Define Rules page to the section labelled Automatic notification/forwarding.
  • Check the Enable vacation message box.
  • Enter your Vacation message text.
Anyone sending you an email will get a response message with the subject:
Auto: (original subject)
and the vacation message you configured.

Remember that you must log in at least every 120 days or your Member account will be closed.

Hmmm...I see where that would work, but is there a way to really disable it so that all incoming messages get a dead account bounceback reply. I suppose the vacation response could be made to look like a dead bounceback.

Thanks, I do appreciate your input a great deal, but I am not sure that is what I want to do.

My trouble...I want computers to get up and fly around the room for me.

My computer only flies when it's sitting in it's bag under the seat in front of me as carry-on baggage.
Without knowing why you want to do this, my answers may continue to not meet your needs. But here is another attempt.

First, you might want to review what a bounce and reject mean:
FAQ: What does the 'Bounce' action do?

As far as I know, a user can cause a reject but not a MTA bounce. You can force a reject on all incoming messages as follows:
  • In the Options > Define Rules screen, you need to add one Rejecting emails rule as follows:
  • In the "Look in" column, choose Advanced. Enter "For text matching" true. Select Add and then Done at the top of the screen to save the rule.
  • By default the reject will be silent. This means that any incoming messages will be discarded without sending a reply to the sender.
  • If you wish to send a reply to the sender, you must disable the silent choice and save the rule with Done. The default reply is "Message bounced by server content filter". If you want to change this message, use the View Filter Source link at the bottom of the Define Rules screen to edit the sieve script.
I believe your account will still receive incoming messages (as far as message quota is concerned), but they will be discarded immediately and a rejection message can optionally be sent to the sender as an email. This is not the same as the Fastmail SMTP server rejecting the email before putting it into your mailbox. Adding limited control over SMTP MTA rejection is being discussed in another thread on this board:
Spam "refuse" options ...

FM can also temporarily suspend your account, I believe. But you'd need to contact Support for this. A suspended account will bounce.

n5bb and kander:

Thank you kindly for your replies. They are very much appreciated.

n5bb, that clears things up a bit. Although I must admit, I am still in a fog because I get bogged by geek speak a bit. I used to be much more up on the techno side of things when I was in the workforce. Now that I have two little guys under five to play with all day, my understanding of all things technical is quite diminished. And here I used to be a computer geek for a living, shame on me.

At any rate, I will do as you suggest. In the mean time, I will re-read once again the links you provided for clarification on the bounce and reject and refuse options.

The thing that started this off is an inundation of spam in my account. It is annoying, as spam always is. But I get probably ten spam emails a day and they are all of the porn variety which is even a bigger irritation…luckily there are no images included in this tasteless tripe.

Please, both of you, accept my apology for not responding sooner. My husband fell ill and he is just now back on his feet. I didn't want either of you to think I was ignoring your kind help.

Thank you ever so much,
Flashbeagle
