No, its compatible. Leading to unlimited possibilities.
The hidden strength is:

You can point your own MX domain to the pubbox.
If you dislike the webmail offered here, you are welcome to set up your own on your website. Your self designed webmail has access via SMTP/IMAP to the full PUBBOX functionality especially the spam filter training and mail sorting.

Thus, PUBBOX is not just an email service, it is an email platform.
For private users with only a few accounts this will be done free of charge.

Even access to the FTP storage is theoretically possible from the self made webmail, because it's totally standards based.

PUBBOX, have you considered, or would you consider, establishing a dedicated forum for the users of your service?

Actually this is a good idea. Martin and Me (Armin) were talking about a blog a year ago. Setting up a forum here on EmailDiscussions would be an honor to me.

Well, I didn't mean necessarily here, and of course I'm not qualified to offer such a thing, I was really meaning on your own site. But wherever it might be, I think it might be helpful to your users (of which I've become a regular one myself).

Sadly, I still cannot get SMTP to work on my client, no matter whether I attempt to send SSL or straight forward; authenticated or not...

I get, "550: Open relay not permitted."
Any suggestions?

Clearly you did not authenticate. What software do you have?
Try setting "authentication" or something like "send password" to on, or if it is a better mailer it will offer you to set CRAM_MD5 or NTLM.

I know that opera does neither nor...

Thanks much for your quick response...

There's the problem; the client is the Reqwireless cellphone client...which is a wireless version of Opera

(now if only they would release a J2ME version of Thunderbird )

There are ways to get it work, though....

But before fetching ugly stuff out of my secret box i'll try to loosen the authentication a little. AUTH PLAIN should be ok when going via SSL. Hang on...

Hopefully Opera is doing AUTH PLAIN at least.

I have enabled successfully AUTH PLAIN and AUTH LOGIN on the encrypted channels only (SSL).
This could have be done earlier, already had that idea in mind, but no one needed it so far

To quote Cleavon Little from "Blazing Saddles":
"That's good! That's real good!!" It's working

I've not seen such a service-oriented individual in here since fabule of euMX...and he claims to be able to pull more rabbits out of the hat ...
