Avatar not updating on the Android app

I use Gravatar in my Fastmail account and recently changed my avatar. I have deleted the old one from the Gravatar site. Using the Fastmail website in Firefox on my PC, it has updated itself to show the new one. Connecting via Firefox on my Android phone, it has also updated to the new one.

However, the Fastmail app on Android persists in showing the old one. I have tried clearing the app cache, and the phone cache and waited patiently for several days. I have also toggled the 'Show avatars' setting off and on again. The old avatar is still showing.

I'd be grateful for suggestions for updating the avatar in the app.

Do you have multiple email addresses / ids defined (a primary & some secondaries) within Gravatar? If so, you may need to update the association between each of these and the specific image(s) you've defined.

What you're describing sounds to me as if only your primary id's associated image got changed.

I had precisely that problem in 2023; although some forum software etc lets one define the 'key' under which it will query the Gravatar service, poorer systems use the credentials with which you log in to the forum concerned. If that's not the same as your primary Gravatar id then - in the early days of Gravatar - you needed to have one Gravatar account per id (which for people like me who use a different email address for every site they login to, made the whole thing impractical).

Fortunately Gravatar now allow you to define other ids which will share use of your single image (if you only use one) or let you choose per-id which of your images their system will return when each id is queried.

If you do use Gravatar a lot, bear in mind that you're implicitly letting them track your use of other websites. Not everyone likes that idea...

Thanks, JeremyNicoll. Yes, I do have multiple addresses, but the same address was persistently showing different avatars in the Android app and the Fastmail web page.

I begin to think that the game is not worth the candle - especially with your privacy reminder. I think I'll do without an avatar in Fastmail.
