Question filter by *recipient* contact group?

Hi, I'd like messages sent to/from some (most) of my masked addresses to be automatically moved to a specific folder. I was thinking I could put them in a contact group and create a filter that sorts incoming emails based on the contact group of any to/from field.

However, although I can filter by group of sender, I couldn't find a way to filter emails by the contact group of the recipient in Fastmail. Before I try other workarounds, does anyone here know to do this or if there's a feature I'm overlooking?

Take a look at the raw message from a message received from one of the correspondents after the group was created. I believe Fastmail, on receipt, adds a custom header to the message with the group name. You can filter based on this. Unfortunately, you cannot identify old messages (from before he group's creation) in that manner.

Adding rule to move masked email messages

This is easy to do for incoming messages sent to one of your masked addresses. Here are the steps:
  • Send an email (from any account, even your main Fastmail account address) to the masked address.
  • The message should be delivered to your Fastmail Inbox. Open that message and select Add rule from message from the Action menu.
  • You will see the Create rule screen with that masked address filled on as a To/Cc/Bcc condition. You probably want to delete the From and Subject conditions, leaving only the To/Cc/Bcc condition.
  • Add the actions needed at the bottom, such as Move to folder.
  • If you want this to always happen without interference from other rules, you might want to uncheck Continue to apply other rules.
  • I recommend adding a Name for the rule so you can remember what it does later.
  • Save the rule. Then test it by again sending a test message to that masked address. The message should appear in the folder as specified in the rule.
  • Repeat these steps for other masked addresses if you want them to be filed in different folders. If you want all of them to be moved to the same folder, you can either create separate rules or edit the original rule to add additional conditions manually with To/Cc/Bcc for the other addresses.
  • The To/Cc/Bcc condition will find messages sent to your account in any manner, including Bcc.

n5bb, that is the procedure I'd like to avoid having to do for each and every email

BritTim, the header is only added on messages *from* senders in group (I did try comparing with/without group). But good idea investigating raw mail; I saw that masked emails have a header
Code:
Fastmail-MaskedEmail: id=masked-12345789; state=enabled
, so then I can at least have a filter that moves mail if it's masked at all, and just make other filters as exceptions if I need to.

Do you really need to file each masked address into a different folder? I find that it?s often easier to use the search feature rather than make more and more folders or labels. A search as follows with find all masked emails you have received:
Code:
 header:Fastmail-MaskedEmail
If you save the search and name it Masked Email, the search will appear below your folder/label list. After choosing a saved search, you can add to it. For example, you can add the following after that recalled saved search to find all masked emails not sent by me (or others with my first name):
Code:
 NOT from:bill
You can choose to find the messages you wish to view either by filing them (manually or automatically) when they arrive or using the search feature to find them at any time in the future. If a message is misfiled it won?t be discoverable by simply clicking on the folder you think it should be in. But one advantage of using folders/labels is that you can reclassify a message by moving or relabeling it.

I use a combination of labels mode and searches. With labels I can add multiple classifications to a message. Searches let me quickly find something that would be difficult to discover manually, such as messages in conversations with a specific friend where two specific words were used.
