Cool. A tiny town in California's Gold Country foothills, it is situated on Highway 49 just south of the city of Auburn and north of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Recreational activities include whitewater rafting, kayaking, and gold-panning in nearby forks of the American River, horseback-riding, camping, hiking, and swimming.

It is also home of the 30th annual International Essen Christmas Mart (November 16-December 23, 2002). Visit their web site at:

Great Barrington. Small town in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts. (I'm not from Massachusetts, but that's 2 for 2 from me). I love this town. It's in a tourist area, but is much more interesting to poke around in than the better known Stockbridge right next door, IMHO. Any place in the Berks is all right with me, though. It's a place where you'll find art, music and lots of people who dance to a different drummer.

Ipoh, Capital of the State of Perak in Malaysia. A town that is surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains and great food. It's famous for pomeloes (somewhat like a large lime) and a buddhist temple inside a cave.

Jackson

In keeping with my previous entry, I continue with another Gold Rush town. From their website:

"Nestled at the 1200 foot level in the Sierra Nevada Foothills in Amador County, the Heart of the Mother Lode, you'll find Jackson, California. Teaming with the rich history of days gone by, Jackson has successfully blended the old and the new.

Visit sites of some of the richest gold producing mines in California, experience the serenity and friendliness of small town charm while enjoying the wide open spaces."

Lake Ronkonkoma. Long Island, NY. Suburb of NYC. It was originally settled as a kind of working class summer community around the lake with pavillions that featured big bands and other entertainments. It's located at the end of Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, the first highway on Long Island and people would drive out from Queens and Brooklyn to little bungalows located around the lake. A little later the pavillions gave way to regular bars and some halfway houses for people with various problems and it was a pretty funky little town for a while in a low rent kind of way. I think it had more bars per capita than most other towns around here. Now it's pretty much a regular suburb with the bungalows converted to year round housing and lots of development over the last few decades. The lake has the obligatory legend attached to it, regarding a Native American princess, starcrossed romance with a member of a different tribe and now the lake takes one young man a year, or so they say.

Mariposa, California

The town's name is Spanish for "butterfly". Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills at around the 2000 feet elevation, it is one of the gateway towns to Yosemite National Park on Highway 140 and one of the many Gold Rush towns on Highway 49.

It was originally part of the territory of the Miwok tribe. Spanish explorers traveling up from Mexico "discovered" this area and named it "Arroyo de las Mariposas" after seeing swarms of butterflies along a meandering stream in a valley, which is what it translates to. Eventually, the name shortened to Mariposa.

Its proximity to the "Wild and Scenic" portion of the nearby Merced River makes the town a good place to stay before tackling the Class 4/5 whitewaters of the river - to all you whitewater rafters and kayakers. Fishing for trout is good, too.
