I do not dispute that this would be a valid feature. You should be aware that FastMail staff rarely visit these forums now. Although not intuitive, the best way to make feature requests now is by opening a support ticket. If others have requested the same feature, you might be lucky enough to see it appear at some point.

A feature I would like to see (which would meet this requirement and many others) is a kind of macro capability. The idea is that a sequence of keyboard actions could be chained together and given a name. Hitting an 'execute macro' key would then bring up a list of macros to be chosen from. The nice thing about such an approach is that it would allow many new features to be added to the interface without adding clutter. A quick change to any desired item in the Settings menu would be a good example. Macros could include standard ones provided by FastMail as well as user defined ones.

I asked fastmail for this in December 2016, Ticket Id: 1785753. I said:

It's a pain having to go into your Settings - Mail - Preferences - to find the default 'View HTML' option and change it, and then after having looked at that one email have to go there again and reset it. It would be fantastic if you could add an option to the 'More' dropdown menu, perhaps after 'Show Raw Message', to 'Show HTML part' (and I suppose for people using the HTML view all the time there might be an advantage in having a 'Show plain text part', though 'Show Raw Message' probably solves most of those issues).

Some of my email is handled by another company, who provide Roundcube as their webmail interface. There's a bunch of things I dislike about that, but one thing it does have is a pair of buttons in every mail viewer window allowing you to choose which view you want to use for that particular email. Every time I look for the same in your interface and fail to find it, I curse!

They said it wasn't in their immediate plans. It's constantly annoying as so many companies don't provide a proper plain text version of whatever they send as HTML.

In the early days of FastMail their webmail was full of that kind of unique features. Now they turned it in something as simple as possible because, so they said, the majority didn’t use it. Sad.

If you have plain text set as the default, try selecting 'Edit as new' for a particular message you want to view as HTML.
On my browser at least, this displays the HTML version.

My goodness! That happens here too. Not only do I normally view in plain text but my write-mail windows are all in plain text too. Now all I have to do is try to remember this feature (and hope it's not a bug that they fix!).

Arrow Viewing individual message plain text content

Well, of course the Edit as New feature is intended for editing the previous message in compose mode, and if you don't have a mechanical keyboard this pops up the onscreen keyboard on the iPad. To remove the keyboard just touch the keyboard hide button in the lower right corner of the display.

You can also do the opposite (view an individual message plain text content).
  • Set Settings>Mail>Preferences>Writing>Message format to Plain text and be sure that the adjacent checkbox is not selected.
  • Then forward or reply to a message and you will see the plain text content.
After reading the contents of the message, be sure to Discard the message in the compose screen in either case so a spurious email is not sent!
