It's just one week into Spring, but I can already be LAZY and steal from other posts.

I don't think of it as a trap but more like a gift he decided to WRAP up for us (at least the one word you unwrapped and used

I guess I was paying RAPT attention, counting characters. Earlier in this thread I made a major mistake, so I know how easy it is!

Well, the first word I thought of was RAFT and of the story of Tom Sawyer, even though it isn't following the thread in theme, I am using that word in this weird sentence anyway!

Tom, Huck and a friend of theirs went to an island on the Mississippi to become pirates. I don't the text to hand - how did they get there? Did they swim, or WADE the river, or take a boat?

As Susan mentioned, it was a raft. The river was WIDE and because of the sand bar at the island they had to wade back and forth between the raft and the island.

Near the start of Tom Sawyer, Chapter XIII: Three miles below St. Petersburg, at a point where the Mississippi River was a trifle over a mile wide, there was a long, narrow, wooded island, with a shallow bar at the head of it, and this offered well as a rendezvous. It was not inhabited; it lay far over toward the further shore, abreast a dense and almost wholly unpeopled forest. So Jackson's Island was chosen. Who were to be the subjects of their piracies was a matter that did not occur to them. Then they hunted up Huckleberry Finn, and he joined them promptly, for all careers were one to him; he was indifferent. They presently separated to meet at a lonely spot on the river-bank two miles above the village at the favorite hour -- which was midnight. There was a small log raft there which they meant to capture.

About two o'clock in the morning the raft grounded on the bar two hundred yards above the head of the island, and they waded back and forth until they had landed their freight.

It wasn't very WISE of me to overlook Susan's post mentioning the raft. OTOH, thanks to the quote I'm glad to see that some wading was also involved.
