Disable sync function between Outlook and Gmail

Hello, I am a 1st time poster. I just opened a gmail account using IMAP and I have a sync issue, as folllows:
When I delete an email on Outlook, the emal is automatically deleted in Gmail. I want to keep the message in Gmail in the event I need to retrieve it sometime later. How do I disable this sync function?

IMAP keeps a mail account synced between the server and the mail application (such as Outlook) on the user's computer. One option for your needs might be to archive unwanted messages (in Gmail's All Mail) instead of trashing them. Another option might be to use POP instead of IMAP. POP downloads copies of mail to your computer, but can be set (in Gmail Settings) to leave copies of messages on Gmail for later access via Gmail's web interface. Hope this helps!

you might try the gmail labs imap enhancement. if you go into the labs menu up by your gmail address that looks like a green beaker, there's an option to enable advanced imap options. at the bottom of the labs page there is a save changes button. then you can click on the forwarding and pop/imap tab, from that page it looks like you can tell it to archive your messages instead of deleting them.
I've never tried this, but it sounds right. You will have to play with it to see exactly what is happening.
