What's happening with EUMX?

I had an EUMX for many years, and a few days ago the domain "eumx.eu" no longer works. I sent myself a message to myself [AT] eumx.eu and it bounced back telling me domain is not active.

Anyone knows what's happening? Thanks

Isn’t it eumx.net, not .eu?

I've just logged into my eumx.net account without a problem.

If the account could be accessed from the eumx.eu URL I certainly wasn't aware of that.

EURid Whois shows that eumx.eu is under "Server Hold":

I seem to remember that eumx.eu was briefly active a good few years ago, as a "development" service. The development, and service, was abandoned after a few months.

eumx.eu was an of alias of eumx.net. The email address has always continued to work. Maybe forgotten to renew?

EUMX.EU is now on a different platform, If you email support he will set you up,

It features SOGO webmail and has a bunch of other features.

Thanks for the replies. .EU was indeed an alternative that worked well until about 5 days ago then suddenly died

I hope it could be restored because I used it to sign up for places that require 2 step verifications with an email code, and now I can't log to those sites.

Love the service. Been my main email for many years

They can easily resolve that issue by changing the address to one in the EU. If I'm not wrong EUMX's headquarters are in Eastern Europe, in a EU country?

Sidenote: I would have allowed existing .eu registrations with British owners to remain active. Just suspend new registrations from the UK, but let owners of existing domains keep their domains. This type of issue is exactly why I am a bit wary to register any domains under a ccTLD as opposed to a gTLD. I would like to register a .tv domain, and I always loved .co.uk because it's so widely used that it's almost like a gTLD. But who tells me they'll allow me to keep my domain for as long as I want to keep it? A gTLD avoids such issues.

I think if you have any commercial use in mind it is best to go with a .com, .org, or .net TLD, and try to purchase all three if you can. At least here in the USA people routinely just assume your website is a .com and will type it in that way.

The point is that many companies etc are registered in other countries, so - not surprisingly - may wish email/website addresses that indicate that.

So eg, www.bbc.co.uk has that address because the BBC is a UK company not an American one.

My (personal) domain is an ".org.uk" one because I live in the UK.

In some cases, companies which operate in different countries, or have legal subsidiaries in different countries will use a whole range of TLDs, for each subsidiary company. Otherwise, one tends to see country-specific subsections of worldwide (ie not just US) websites using URLs like

www.companyname.com/en-gb/
www.companyname.com/de/
www.companyname.com/fr/ ...

to accommodate language and cultural differences.

The BBC has a .com address too! My point is just that for anyone with any expectation of correspondence or web visitors from outside of their own country I think it is desirable to have a .com, .org, or .net address, and then you can keep it forever. The situation with .eu addresses points out one of the possible problems. What if you move to a different country? Your .co.uk address then gets tossed out the window.
