Who is "the other provider?"

Runbox 7 Webmail entering open beta phase

From today's Runbox Blog:

https://blog.runbox.com/2018/11/runb...en-beta-phase/

We are excited to announce that the Runbox 7 Webmail beta test is now open to the public!

A large number of improvements and bug fixes have been made since our previous update, including an even faster Webmail, web push notifications on incoming email, and inline message previews.

There is now a Runbox 7 mobile app (Progressive Web App) available too, making Runbox a joy to use on your mobile phone!

We’d like to thank the hundreds of beta testers in our beta test community for all their contributions thus far, and helping us build the fastest webmail app on the planet!

Ready for a test drive?

Just head to https://runbox.com/app and then join our community at community.runbox.com to take part in the Runbox revolution!

From the quoted roadmap:
Quote:
Runbox 7 is a research and development project with funding from The Research Council of Norway. This is a Norwegian government agency
An independent email provider taking money from the government?
Conspiracy theorists will undoubtedly have a field day

I played a little with it again. Not ready for primetime. Development takes far too long. This harms Runbox.

I've read on their own forum that Runbox 7 is going live on Dec. 7.

We are planning to make Runbox 7 the default webmail for new users on December 7, so you can imagine we are rather busy fixing the remaining issues.

No subscription at the moment. How is Runbox 7 now doing? Can it already be used as daily driver?

I think so, yes, maybe. But YMMV. It's not GREAT. It's one of those webmail interfaces that may elicit a strong reaction. Yes, they are continually making improvements, and I'm happy they decided to stick with the custom approach instead of using some skinned third-party webmail, but as has been mentioned, development is very very VERY slow. I don't like the design itself, but each time I use it, I find it is growing on me a little. I tend to use Runbox more with external email clients and I still find the company to be very good and reliable, with some really nice people that run it. If you've been on the fence, I'd suggest giving them a trial and see how it feels to you.
