Secure personal web portal -- Is it possible to set it up within file storage?

I would like to set up a secure web portal for storing and sharing files securely. Is that possible to achieve withing fastmail.fm's File space?

To start with, it'll be as secure as your password in the first place

Fastmail is basically an email provider, so I bet its prices include a fair share of mail development/operation expenses. This means paying for something you won't use. And, if you look at FM's charges purely from the point of view of Gigabytes per dollar, they are grossly expensive.

Note that FM imposes bandwidth limits on transfers from the file storage. Of course these limits may, or may not, be relevant to your intended application.

So my opinion is: yes, you can use FM for file storing & sharing, it's your money after all...

Yes you can setup a file location that you can access as a password protected web page.
It can be setup to appear as a directory from which you can download, or to appear as a directory from which you can both download and upload.

Yes, for simple storing and sharing of moderate numbers of small to medium size files this is fine. One of my customers defines a separate download location (and password) for each of his clients. It is actually pretty nice, because the client's name appears in the URL and it looks as though something special has been created for them. Recognize, though, that the amount of space is quite limited. You will need procedures in place that clean out dead data or you will fill up your file space.

With an Enhanced account the file storage works pretty well. You have 2 GB of file storage standard (additional can be purchased), the maximum individual file size is 50 MB, and you can transfer 1 GB/hour.
  • While logged into the web interface, the account owner can directly set up folders and add/delete files. The account owner can also set up web access to particular folders at Fastmail domain aliases or your own domains.
  • Access to files can be via web pages (open or password protected), FTP, or DAV.
  • You can set up open or password-protected websites which allow others to both upload and download files.
  • You can control whether file access via a URL produces a directory listing or if the user must specify the exact filename.
  • And you can tell the Fastmail web access system to set up simple photo galleries for certain folders.
  • You can also set up your own websites by uploading HTML to a web-enabled folder. But you can not execute server-side scripting.
  • The membership levels and prices list shows additional details.

Lightbulb You can also save your own files as attachments

If some of the files you want to store are just for you to retrieve, and if you have more mailbox space than file space to spare, you can attach them to one or more messages you compose and save as drafts. That isn't exactly what you were asking for, but it does free up space that can hold files for others to access via the web portal.
