I've noticed that in the last couple of days several "old timers" appeared and asked for invites. Perhaps it's the new gmail forum that gives the incentive. Perhaps it's the fact that there are so many invites available now, so asking for one usually means getting one.

If this goes on for a few more weeks, Gmail would be able to grow to the size of Yahoo/Hotmail before the beta is over: they use existing subscribers to actively promote the service. And frankly, it's much more usable for the average emailer than a Hotmail acount.
