Websites vs Private

I bought a domain today and added it at FastMail, but later found that in the Files listing some website files show "Website" and others say "Private". I don't understand this and have not seen it before, but if the files were actually private then the related websites would not be viewable. This issue is not just with the new domain, but also others I already had. Some which have files and others that are redirected.

You can have private files available to view by anyone, if you have a specific link - it doesn't have to be part of a website.

For example, this first image:

https://postimg.cc/7fXjxGTz

This jpg image is marked private, yet I can create a "secret link".

The second image:

https://postimg.cc/18t24mpj

The "secret link" has been enabled, and anyone with that link can access that file online - it's not a website.

Does that help?

Websites @FM

It helps with postimg - may have to sign up with that one! But would like to know the meaning of the change in the listing at FastMail. It does appear that the "Private" files are accessible.

They are, if the 'secret link' is enabled and shared.

If a folder is marked private, but the secret link is enabled, can that folder be discovered by web crawl bots?

Possibility

I think I may have it figured out, though it doesn't necessarily make sense. I don't have "secret links" enabled, but I did look at where one can do that. What it is, is that if one has Files under https://domain.com but configures that to show Files in https://www.domain.com, the former becomes Private and the www is the website that does display. So Files are called Private by default, I guess, and all that matters is the Websites they are configured to show through. Hard to even say, much less understand, lol.

That's a good feature, too.

I use postimg for images that I value, but not by much. I use the Files feature of FastMail, and the disk space I have on my web hosts account for the images that are really important to me. The only feature I know is if you're signed up you can have separate albums. I guess it's easier to post or share a link again too, if you haven't saved it or something.
