Smile Pictures from last week's move

We've posted some pictures we took when moving the servers last Tuesday, if you'd like to know what they (and we) look like.

Heavy lifting and dirty, noisy bunkers are what men exist for, sheesh.

Thanks for sharing these, Geir. I was also interested to read the names you have given the servers. I've seen some of these in email headers over the years but not sure I've ever seen these listed all in one place!

Hi Henry!

All the servers are named after more or less well-known (or mythological) dogs, and we sort of think of the data center as a (very high security) dog pound.

Over the years our pack has seen many servers come and go, and we recall with some nostalgia Pluto (the very first server we had when RMM was launched in 2000 -- it had a whopping 80GB storage in total for all the 100 000 users at the time), and Rex, Fido, Fifi, Kerberos, Garm, Lassie, and Greyhound, which was just retired the day before we moved after many years of reliable (and loyal) service.

Now that services are increasingly virtualized the physical hardware matters less, and servers are replaced more and more often anyway. We still like naming our servers, though -- they do an important job and it's the least we could do in return, really.

At least you don't name your servers after planets. As the linked strip (and the following one) shows, that could have been a major mistake.

Thanks for the extra info, Geir. I vaguely remember the Pluto server, believe it or not! In fact, I've just tracked down an email from 2001 and have had a quick look at the headers. Sure enough, Pluto is the receiving server.

Thanks for the planets cartoon, Robert - very amusing. The other problem with naming servers after planets is you are a little stuck when a planet ceases to be classified as such. A 'Pluto' server, for example, would need to be downgraded to a dwarf server!
