Gmail changes
Gmail have recently updated and in doing so it has lost things like contact lists and the ability to fetch some mail from none gmail accounts.

Not sure what you mean--my desktop Gmail and Gmail on Android have not lost contact lists. Not sure about fetching email. Can you point us to some documentation of these changes?
