Fastmail error 451: Already reached limit of 1600 logins per-day

Hi,

For many years I've been getting occasional (though not constant) problems trying to log in to my Fastmail email account either from my browser or via Outlook Express. I get the error "451 Already reached per-day limit for logins by "-------@fastmail.fm" of 1600, try again later".

Would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Btw I'm not accessing it from mobile so buggy mobile apps suggested elsewhere are not the problem.

Maybe you have some kind of email notification program running?

Well then maybe it's just the client program that is 'checking' for new email too often. Is it (OE) using the POP or IMAP servers? If it's setup to use the POP servers, it shouldn't connect and check more often than every 5 or 6 minutes. If I was using a POP server, I wouldn't have it check more than every 10-15 minutes. It should also be set to not check when you are not going to be available for a while, like when you're sleeping, or on vacation/holiday.

Check the Login Log (Advanced -> Login Log) for clues. You may find that a misbehaving mobile application (especially if using IMAP) is the source of the problem.

Thanks very much for the advice guys. I'm using OE and the IMAP servers.

I've checked the login log as you suggested BritTim. It shows a few things...
1) Logins only seem to be coming from my IP so at least I don't have a hacking problem.
2) The number of logins exceeds the setting in OE - by a factor of about three!
3) Finally, the total number of logins per day is well below the 1500 per day that the error is claiming.

Puzzling.

Just making a wild guess.

Maybe you have your account in OE configured to check several folders, and maybe checking each folder counts as a "login"?

If the number of logins is well below 1500 per day, then I would file a support request the next time you encounter the problem. There could be a bug of some kind, or the message might be bogus with the real limit being something else.

Have corrected this and so far I'm not getting the "1500" error. Thanks CyberSmurf.

I notice android email does 2 logins for each poll, maybe OE does 3.

There is an option to update folder counts, you don't need that if you sync every folder. Might save you a login.

OE does PUSH on the current folder (but it may timeout). If you keep that INBOX, you can increase your polling interval.
