I ran across this article, which I found interesting, about Ladar Levison, founder of Lavabit email.

Well, yes, I knew the article was from a while ago, but I just ran across it now - and the biographical part isn't going to have changed. I think it's a hugely interesting story, especially his younger days.

...and lavabit did never refund the pre-payed money to the customers that fianced his service and his life. there was a message, i guess here in this forum, in september 2013, that the will refund money... did not see any $ since this time back on my bankaccount.

Weren't there some comments about him made a while back here on the forum by the guy behind vfemail, HavocMan? I can't remember if the comments were complimentary or not.

Let's not forget that Lavabit always had free email accounts available. I used one myself for a long time, but I forget for how long exactly.

I never did get the impression that they were a money hungry company - I was never hustled to open a paid account during the time that I used them.
