hotmail.backup (or lack of...)

I am trying to help a friend's mother whose hotmail account was hacked (we believe) on 22 Dec, and all emails deleted.

MS online chat support says deleted emails are lost permanently as "the system removes deleted messages from backup."

I just can't believe there is no way to recover anything at all - in the same 24 hours - not much of a backup system if so!! - does anyone have any experience?

This surely doesn't mean there are no backups, but that they are unavailable for individual restore requests.

I'm sure that Microsoft backs up and keeps everything. Just not for your convenience.
